From Thanksgiving day in the United States, Mid-Autumn Festival in China, La Toussaint in France, and Chuseok in Korea, the act of giving thanks for the harvest of the year and sharing joy is a long-standing tradition in various cultures. As the saying goes, harvesting and harvesting (秋收冬藏), since agricultural societies, mankind has repeated their life of sowing seeds in the spring, growing them in the summer, reaping them in the fall, and storing them in the winter. In particular, if they did not spend the harvest season well, their lives were also in crisis because the winter of that year was very harsh. In a way, the harvest, which wraps up such a long process and prepares for the life to come, is close to an adventure.
The client, who lived abroad for a long time, also went through many places throughout his life and finally found a home in Hannam-dong. It must have been a series of unfamiliar and difficult processes to leave his hometown and move to various places.
leveling the ground
A height difference of more than 4m, a retaining wall of an adjacent site with a height of 5m, a one-way road, and a road originally used as a road but used as stairs. Judging from various conditions, the land was not fertile for habitation. First of all, the relationship between the land and the building was organized. Due to the limitation of sunlight, the building had to be closely attached to the front road on the south side. Fortunately, the front road was relatively flat. Since it was the only way to enter the alley, we placed the parking lot and rental space first.

As for the rental space, from the beginning of the planning, a gallery or showroom suitable for the atmosphere of the neighborhood was planned, but as a parallel parking lot was arranged at the main entrance, it was inevitable that it would be spaced behind the pilotis. In order to improve the low face-to-face ratio, the rental space was made into a duplex, and a wide-open window was installed in the corner of the building to be used as a show window.
The main entrance to the detached house is placed at the highest point of the stair-type back road, completely separating the rental space and the circulation. In preparation for the elderly life of the owner, an elevator access road (side entrance) was placed at the rear of the parking lot on the front road.

Rice straw weaving & stacking
In the case of a site subject to solar radiation, the usable floor area decreases as the floor level increases. As a result, the exclusive area of the detached house was less than 36 pyeong. Since there were many programs required within a limited area, a compositional method was chosen in which various boundaries were well weaved and piled up.

When you go up one floor through the main entrance, you will find a dining space, kitchen, and living room. These three spaces were arranged so that they could be seen at a glance, and the gaze naturally reached through the borrowed scenery beyond the window to make the space look wider. The rest has a small study, toilet, and pantry.

The upper floor is divided into three groups: bathroom, external bathroom, bedroom/dressing room/laundry room, and bathroom. In particular, securing privacy in a residential space in the city center lowers the sense of openness of the space.

If you go up the stairs between the external bathroom and the dressing room, you will see an attic with a view of Namsan Mountain and the Han River at a glance. It is a space where couples can enjoy private time.

The composition of weaving, stacking and arranging spaces is also well revealed in the elevation. A change was made by using glass, metal, and bricks with different patterns on the brick elevation, which emphasized the feeling of horizontality. Horizontally long windows, vertical windows and metal panels at the corner of the road, and vertically stacked bricks harmonize the housing and rental space in one building.
