The results of the design competition for the Gudeok Folk Art Museum, which will become the new base for folk culture in Busan, have been announced. The winning work is ‘Gudeok Folk Art Museum that adapts to nature and accommodates various users’ by ‘Ateleo Architects’.

The project, which was planned to demolish the old facilities of the Folk Art Center, which has been a traditional culture center in the West Mountain region for over 30 years, and continue the legacy of intangible cultural assets in an improved environment, held a contest in January this year to select the optimal design plan. did.
The project site is San 2-3, Seodaesin-dong 3-ga, Seo-gu, Busan, and two other lots. The new building will be built on a site where the existing facility was demolished, with a total floor area of ​​1,870 m², 1 basement floor, and 3 above-ground floors, under the condition of maintaining an outdoor performance hall. It is composed of an indoor performance hall, an arts education space, and an outdoor performance hall, and is expected to not only efficiently transmit intangible heritage and educational activities, but also naturally attract users by linking with the surrounding park.

The winning work has a simple and understated exterior reminiscent of a tree, blending in with the nearby nature and creating a natural connection between the trail at the high point and the waterside park at the low point. The yard on the first floor, the connecting yard on the second floor, and the outdoor performance hall prepared under the piloti structure are used not only as a venue for various events but also as a rest area, accommodating a variety of users along with visitors to the folk art museum. In the evaluation, the architectural mass and harmony with the surroundings, clear floor plan, and actively open space were evaluated as impressive.

The Gudeok Folk Arts Museum, which will be newly transformed, will operate a variety of programs such as permanent performances and educational content for the preservation and transmission of intangible cultural assets, strengthening its role and function as a folk arts museum and further leading to the revitalization of the local community in Busan.
