(New York = Yonhap Infomax) Correspondent Jinho Jeong = The core personal consumption expenditures (PCE) price index, a price indicator preferred by the U.S. Federal Reserve (Fed), met Wall Street’s expectations compared to the previous month.

The U.S. Department of Commerce announced on the 26th (local time) that the core PCE price index in March rose 0.3% compared to the previous month.

This figure is in line with the market forecast of a 0.3% increase compiled by the Wall Street Journal (WSJ).

The monthly increase in March was the same as February.

The core PCE price index rose 0.5% compared to the previous month in January, again stimulating inflation concerns, but showed signs of slowing down to some extent as the monthly increase was limited to 0.3% from February to March.

The core PCE price index in March rose 2.8% compared to the same period last year, exceeding the market forecast of a 2.7% increase by 0.1 percentage points.

The core PCE price index excludes highly volatile energy and food prices.

The March PCE price index, which includes both energy and food prices, also rose 0.3% from the previous month, meeting market expectations.

The PCE price index in March rose 2.7% compared to the same period last year, slightly exceeding the expected 2.6% increase.

The PCE price index also showed the same monthly increase as last February.

Consumer spending by U.S. households, which accounts for two-thirds of the U.S. economy, remained robust.

Personal consumption expenditure in March increased by 0.8% compared to the previous month, showing the same monthly increase as personal consumption expenditure in February. Personal consumption expenditures in March exceeded market expectations for a 0.7% increase.

Personal income (after-tax basis) in March increased 0.5% compared to the previous month, meeting market expectations. The February figure was a 0.3% increase.
