Ministry of Industry, ‘Public-Public Technology Innovation Alliance’ meeting… Announcement of technology commercialization strategy

The Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy announced on the 24th that it held the ‘Public-Public Technology Innovation Alliance’ meeting at Yonsei University.

This event was prepared to discuss ways to revitalize technology commercialization for the great industrial transformation with the participation of related ministries, universities, research institutes, companies, and private experts.

On this day, the Ministry of Industry announced the ‘Technology Commercialization Strategy (draft) for Dynamic Innovative Growth’, which is being prepared jointly by related ministries.

This strategy was promoted under the judgment that although the performance of commercialization using technology developed through technology transfer of public technology and government R&D is increasing, impactful results are lacking.

According to the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy, the number of transfers of public technology exceeded 15,000 for the first time last year, a three-fold increase compared to 10 years ago.

As of 2020, 33,000 cases of commercialization using technologies developed through government research and development (R&D) have been achieved annually.

Nevertheless, many point out that impactful results are not enough compared to the government’s R&D investment of 30 trillion won per year.

To solve this problem, the Ministry of Industry selected seven policy tasks by collecting opinions and integrating policies of related ministries over the past six months.

First of all, in order to establish a virtuous cycle system for corporate innovation, ▲strengthen performance-oriented throughout the entire R&D process ▲promote technology trade to foster first movers ▲intensive support for challenging commercialization and scale-up ▲promote the cradle of high-tech start-up in public research institutes.

In addition, in order to create an autonomous and collaboration-based ecosystem, ▲incentivize public research institutes to invest in commercialization and expand their capabilities ▲revitalize the role and functions of private specialized institutes ▲build an online/offline collaboration platform.

Meanwhile, the Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy plans to supplement the ‘Technology Commercialization Strategy for Dynamic Innovative Growth (draft)’ by reflecting the opinions presented by industry-university-related experts, and announce it as the 8th technology transfer commercialization promotion plan this month.

Youngjin Jang, First Vice Minister of Industry, said, “A great industrial transformation is possible only when companies challenge technology innovation and lead commercialization.” I will back it up,” he said.

Opinions on the agenda can be submitted between November 25th and December 5th through the website of the National Technology Bank operated by the Korea Institute for Advancement of Technology.
