Broadcaster Park Soo-hong (53) revealed health problems caused by stress.

On the 22nd, a video titled ‘Ssangchuk Party with Park Soo-hong’ was posted on the YouTube channel ‘Udon Sali’. In this video, Park Soo-hong said, “When my blood sugar is the highest, it’s when I’m stressed,” and, “I didn’t eat anything, but the level went through the ceiling.” He continued, “Actually, my eye was torn due to a retinal tear. I can see well in one eye, but the other eye is blurry, which is painful. “In health information programs, you have to read the messages accurately, but the lighting makes you keep blinking,” he said. We learn more about the health problems Park Soo-hong suffered from stress.

◇Retinal tear, if severe, may result in vision loss
A retinal tear is a disease in which a hole occurs when the retina is torn. The retina is the innermost cell membrane of the eye. It can be called the film of our eyes because it is where the light reflected from objects is concentrated. Symptoms of a retinal tear include pain, bleeding, and decreased vision. The inside of our eyes is filled with vitreous body, which has a jelly-like texture. Due to aging or myopia, the vitreous body turns into liquid and pulls on the retina, causing a retinal tear. If a retinal tear persists for a long time, it can lead to retinal detachment, in which the retina is completely separated. Retinal detachment is a disease in which the function of optic cells gradually deteriorates due to lack of nutrients in the retina, which can lead to loss of vision. If the disease progresses to a large extent, symptoms include clouding, where black spots appear to be floating in the eyes, or photopsia, where flashing lights appear in the field of vision as if a flash were exploding. Retinal tears are more likely to be caused by lifestyle habits rather than stress itself.

In the early stages when a retinal tear is discovered but has not worsened to retinal detachment, laser treatment can be attempted without surgery. If you are experiencing symptoms of blurred vision or decreased vision, the retinal detachment has progressed to an advanced stage and surgical treatment should be considered.

◇Stress has a direct or indirect effect on blood sugar
Cortisol, a stress hormone, causes direct and indirect changes in blood sugar. Cortisol is secreted in a variety of situations, but is mainly produced in response to the body’s fear and stress. In response to external stimuli, more blood is released, muscles become tense, and cortisol is secreted, causing blood sugar and blood pressure to rise. Cortisol also reduces the function of leptin, a hormone that suppresses appetite, making blood sugar control more difficult. Additionally, when sleep quality deteriorates due to repeated stress, the biological rhythm is disrupted, affecting hormone secretion and causing blood sugar levels to rise, repeating a vicious cycle.

Therefore, it is important to relieve stress on a daily basis. It is better to release your emotions rather than keeping them bottled up. If you are unable to properly vent your negative emotions because you feel like you have to always show a bright side to others, it can lead to depression. It is also a good way to set priorities in life. You need to recognize what is truly important to you, such as family and hobbies. If you allocate your time appropriately according to the importance you think, you can feel happy.
