Research results have shown that aspirin prevents the development and progression of colon cancer.

Dr. Marco Scarpa’s team at the University of Padua in Italy collected tissue samples from 238 patients who underwent colon cancer surgery between 2015 and 2019 to determine the effect of long-term aspirin use on colon cancer. The research team divided the participants into long-term aspirin users and non-users, then compared and analyzed their tissue differences and gene expression when colon cancer cells were exposed to aspirin.

As a result of the study, tissue samples from long-term aspirin users showed less cancer metastasis to the lymph glands and a higher level of tumor infiltration by immune cells than those from non-aspirin users. Additionally, in an experiment in which colon cancer cells were exposed to aspirin, the expression of the CD80 protein gene was found to increase in certain immune cells. CD80 detects the presence of tumor-related proteins and sends a warning to other immune cells. In the case of aspirin users, the CD80 expression rate in healthy rectal mucosal tissue was found to be higher than that in non-users. The research team explained that this suggests that aspirin helps the immune system’s tumor surveillance function.

“The concentration of aspirin absorbed can be very different depending on the location in the colon,” said study author Dr. Marco Scarpa. “We need to think about ways,” he said.

This study was recently published in ‘CANCER’, the journal of the American Cancer Society (ACS).
