Black coffee is beneficial for weight loss and dementia prevention
Today.com, USA, highlights articles related to black coffee

[대한급식신문=안유신 기자] An article was published in a famous American media outlet claiming that black coffee helps with weight loss and dementia prevention. In this media, the calories in one cup of black coffee were described as 2 kcal, the caffeine content as 95 mg, and the fat and protein contents as 0 g and 0.3 g, respectively.

According to the Korea Food Communication Forum, TODAY.com recently published an article related to black coffee (Black Coffee Benefits: Dietitian On Heart Health, Weight Loss, Risks). Here are four health benefits you can get from drinking more than one cup of black coffee a day.

An American media outlet reported that black coffee helps with weight loss and dementia prevention.

First, it is good for heart health. According to a paper (Association Between Coffee Intake and Incident Heart Failure Risk) published in ‘Circulation: Heart Failure’ in 2021, the more coffee consumed (more than one cup of coffee a day), the lower the risk of heart failure. In other words, consuming 2 to 3 cups of coffee a day is associated with longer lifespan and reduced risk of heart disease and heart rhythm problems. This is a benefit of coffee that applies to both people with and without heart disease.

Second, it can lower mortality, and another research paper states that drinking unsweetened coffee is associated with lowering the risk of death (Association of Sugar-Sweetened, Artificially Sweetened, and Unsweetened Coffee Consumption With All-Cause and Cause-Specific Mortality: A Large Prospective Cohort Study, Annals of Internal Medicine, 2022) was also published. In this paper, people who drank 1.5 to 3.5 cups of coffee daily without added sugar had a 16 to 21 percent lower risk of death over 7 years than people who did not drink coffee at all. Coffee drinkers also had a reduced risk of developing liver disease and type 2 (adult-onset) diabetes.

Third, it is also helpful for dieting. Research supports this finding that consuming moderate amounts of caffeinated coffee can be an effective weight management strategy. This paper (Increase from low to moderate, but not high, caffeinated coffee consumption is associated with favorable changes in body fat) was published in the journal Clinical Nutrition in 2023. According to the paper, it was found that people who rarely drank coffee but increased their coffee intake up to seven cups a week had a decrease in total body fat. It was assumed that coffee’s anti-obesity effect is because coffee affects metabolism by activating metabolism. People who enjoy coffee also tend to engage in more physical activity.

Fourth, it is beneficial for brain health. Research has shown that people who drink 4 to 6 cups of coffee a day have a lower incidence of stroke and dementia, and this research paper is titled (Consumption of coffee and tea and risk of developing stroke, dementia, and poststroke dementia: A cohort study in the UK Biobank) was published in ‘Plos Health’ in 2021. Coffee can improve your mood, and moderate amounts of caffeine can help relieve depression. This is because it stimulates dopamine, a neurotransmitter in the brain.
