Director Park Chan-wook’s ‘Decision to Break Up’ was not a finalist in the international feature film category at this year’s Academy Awards. The most nominated film this year was ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’.
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS) announced on the 24th that ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ (Germany) and ‘Argentina, 1985’ (Argentina) were nominated for the International Feature Film category at the 95th American Academy Awards. Close’ (Belgium), ‘EO’ (Poland), and ‘The Quiet Girl’ (Ireland). ‘Decision to break up’ was listed on the list of 15 preliminary candidates announced on December 21 last year, but it did not make it to the final list of 5 of them. Along with ‘Decision to Break Up’, ‘RRR’, which was considered a strong candidate for the award, was also eliminated.
‘Decision to Break Up’ was nominated as a finalist at the Golden Globe Awards and Critics’ Choice Awards held earlier. But I didn’t win. ‘Argentina, 1985’ won the Golden Globe and ‘RRR’ won the Critics Choice Award.
‘Decision to Break Up’ is a new film released by director Park in six years since ‘The Handmaiden’ in 2016. It depicts the romance between a detective named Hae-joon, who investigates the death of a middle-aged man after falling from a mountain, and Seorae, the wife of the deceased man. Actor Park Hae-il played Hae-jun, and Tang Wei played Seorae. This work received the Best Director Award at the Cannes International Film Festival in May last year and attracted attention from audiences around the world. At the time of screening at the film festival, the audience and critics praised it so much that it was evaluated as a “masterpiece” with one voice. In Korea, it was released at the end of June last year and 1.89 million people watched it.
Meanwhile, the most nominated film this year at the Oscars was ‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’ directed by Daniel Kwan and Daniel Sheinert. This work has been named 11 times in 10 categories, including work, director, screenplay, female lead, supporting actress (2 people), supporting actor, editing, music, theme song, and costume. Director Martin McDonagh’s ‘The Banshee of Inisherin’ and director Edvard Berger’s ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’ were nominated for 9 categories respectively, and followed.
Nominees for Best Picture include ‘All Quiet on the Western Front’, ‘Avatar: Waterway’, ‘Inisherin’s Banshee’, ‘Elvis’, ‘Everything Everywhere All at Once’, ‘The Pabelmans’, ‘Tar’, ‘Top Gun: Maverick’ and ‘Triangle of the Dead’. Sadness’, ‘Woman Talking’, etc., a total of 10 films were listed. Cate Blanchett (‘Tar’), Michelle Williams (‘The Favelmans’), Zichong Liang (‘Everything Everywhere All At Once’), Ana de Armas (‘Blonde’), Andrea Riseborough (‘Two’), Cate Blanchett (‘Tar’) Leslie’) was selected. Austin Butler (‘Elvis’), Colin Farrell (‘The Banshee of Inisherin’), Brendan Fraser (‘The Whale’), Bill Nighy (‘Living’) and Paul Mezcal (‘Aftersun’) were nominated for Best Actor.
This year’s Academy Awards will be held at the Dolby Theater in Los Angeles, USA on March 12.
