(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Song Eun-kyung = The famous American pop artist Robert Indiana’s masterpiece ‘LOVE’ was damaged in Myeong-dong, Seoul, and the police are investigating.
According to Daishin Securities on the 26th, graffiti was painted with lacquer spray on ‘LOVE’, a representative sculpture series by Robert Indiana (1928-2018) installed in front of the headquarters of Daishin Financial Group in Jung-gu, Seoul.
On the CCTV installed near the work, a man presumed to be a foreigner was caught scribbling on the work using black spray around 2 am on the 21st.
It is known that several letters of ‘ZOMBRA’ painted on this work have recently been found in Euljiro and Myeongdong.
Daishin Securities found traces of graffiti and reported it to Namdaemun Police Station in Seoul. Police are said to be conducting identification procedures to identify the suspect.
This work is a sculpture installed by Daishin Financial Group when it moved its office building from Yeouido to Euljiro in 2016, and is the group’s private property.
At that time, Daishin Securities contacted the Robert Indiana Foundation to purchase the work, and it was recorded as the first case in which ‘LOVE’ was permanently installed in a public place in Seoul.
The group estimates that it will take considerable time and money to restore the work as it must be sent to the Robert Indiana Foundation.
An official from Daishin Securities said, “All acts of vandalism to private property are illegal and can be punished by imprisonment for up to three years or a fine of up to 5 million won.” “he said.
