Singer Lee Eru (real name Cho Seong-hyeon), who was sentenced to probation on charges of drunk driving and changing drivers, will appear in court again next month.

According to the legal community on the 19th, the first appeal trial on charges of aiding Eru’s escape from a criminal, drunk driving and speeding under the Road Traffic Act will be held on March 7th at the Seoul Western District Court 2-2 Criminal Division (Presiding Judge Lee Hyun-woo).

Iru was handed over to trial on a total of four charges, including aiding the escape of a criminal, aiding and abetting drunk driving, and drunk driving and speeding under the Road Traffic Act.

On September 5th of last year, Eru was accused of driving a car while drunk and switching drivers with his passenger, professional golfer A.

Also, at around 11:25 p.m. on December 19th of last year, while drinking and driving, he crashed into the right guardrail near Dongho Bridge on Hannam Bridge in the direction of Guri, Gangbyeonbuk-ro. Eru’s blood alcohol level, measured by the police immediately after the accident, was at a level equivalent to a license suspension (more than 0.03% but less than 0.08%).

He admitted all charges made in the previous first trial. At the same time, Eru’s legal representative requested that Lee Eru be treated leniently considering his contribution as a leading figure of the Korean Wave in Indonesia and the fact that he is taking care of his mother who suffers from dementia.

At the time, the prosecution requested a one-year prison sentence and a fine of 100,000 won. However, the court sentenced him to six months in prison and one year of probation, saying, “Considering that he regretted his mistakes and had no criminal record.” The prosecution objected and appealed. The prosecution stated the reason for the appeal, saying, “We took into account the seriousness of the crime and the need to raise social awareness about drunk driving, which threatens the safety of the public.”
