‘Cycad flowers that bloom once every 100 years’ bloom at Gangwon Provincial Arboretum

(Chuncheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Hae-yong = Cycad flowers, which are usually difficult to see, are blooming at the Gangwon Provincial Arboretum’s Four Seasons Botanical Garden, attracting attention.

There is a popular belief that the cycad flower, which is called a living fossil because it blooms once in several decades and then dies, brings good luck to those who see the flower.

At the Gangwon Provincial Arboretum, agave flowers have bloomed ahead of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics and the 2023 Gangwon World Forest Expo, so this cycad flower is welcomed as an auspicious sign for the successful hosting of the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympic Games.

Chae Byeong-moon, director of the Provincial Forest Science Research Institute, said, “It is a very happy event to be able to see cycad flowers again following agave,” and added, “I hope that next year’s Winter Youth Olympics will be a success.”
