On the 24th, the Gyeonggi Provincial Council opened the ‘Gyeonggi Provincial Council Seoul Office’, the first local council in the country to support legislative activities at the National Assembly.

This is a key project promoted by Chairman Yeom Jong-hyun of the Provincial Council with the goal of establishing a close cooperative relationship between the Provincial Council and the National Assembly.

The Provincial Council held an opening ceremony at the Provincial Council’s Seoul office located in Yeouido-dong, Yeongdeungpo-gu, Seoul this afternoon.

Chairman Yeom and others toured the Seoul office, held a signboard unveiling ceremony, and then had a tea meeting to discuss the purpose of opening the office and operational plans.

Chairman Yeom said, “In order to realize true local autonomy and decentralization, we need to be proactive in establishing laws and systems appropriate for the strengthened status and role of local councils.” He added, “It is the largest local council in the country and the eldest brother of the 17 metropolitan councils. “As such, the Gyeonggi Provincial Council wants to be at the forefront of developing local councils and realizing the value of local decentralization,” he said, explaining the background to the establishment of the Seoul office.

He continued, “We expect that the opening of the Seoul office will further open up the flow of communication and exchange, including personnel exchanges with the National Assembly, which began after the inauguration of the Speaker,” and added, “It will serve as a ‘forward base for communication’ between the National Assembly and the National Assembly in relation to legislative issues, which is the core role of the Gyeonggi Provincial Council. “We look forward to establishing ourselves as a leader,” he said.

Vice Chairman Nam Kyung-soon said, “I am grateful to the Chairman for establishing a symbolic support agency for the National Assembly, befitting the status of the largest metropolitan council,” and added, “I hope that the establishment of the Seoul office will serve as a catalyst for active exchange with the National Assembly.”

Representative Nam Jong-seop said, “I hope that this opening will be a starting point for expanding legislative exchanges between local councils and the National Assembly in the era of local autonomy.”

Kim Dal-su, Senior Secretary for Political Affairs, said, “I am confident that the Seoul office will become an important place that conveys the voices of Gyeonggi-do residents throughout the country and plays a greater role in the development of local autonomy.” He added, “I congratulate the provincial council on its new beginning and look forward to valuable achievements from the Seoul office.” ” delivered a congratulatory message from Governor Kim Dong-yeon.

The Seoul office, located about 400 meters away from the entrance outside the National Assembly, has an exclusive area of 59㎡ (approximately 18 pyeong) and is equipped with a conference room, smart work space (office), and reception room. A staff member from the National Assembly Secretariat will be stationed here and will be responsible for various support tasks.

The main functions are △ identifying legislative trends in the National Assembly and providing data △ supporting legislative activities for provincial lawmakers visiting the National Assembly △ supporting communication in the National Assembly and promoting legislative policies.

Starting next year, the Provincial Council has decided to gradually expand its functions, such as ‘discovering mid- to long-term cooperation tasks with the National Assembly’ and ‘building a legislative network with the National Assembly and related organizations.’
