Democratic Party, hardline mode on special prosecutors and subsidies… tug of war between leaders

[뉴스리뷰]

The President’s Office and the Democratic Party are having difficulty reaching an agreement on the agenda to be discussed at the leadership meeting.

This is because the agenda requested by the Democratic Party is difficult for the President’s Office to readily accept.

Reporter Lee Eun-jeong reports on the status of the summit talks.

The result of the first meeting between the President’s Office and the Democratic Party for a meeting between President Yoon Seok-yeol and Democratic Party leader Lee Jae-myung was empty-handed.

The obstacle to consultation was the agenda.

The Democratic Party’s position is that the payment of 250,000 won in livelihood recovery support per person, as requested by Representative Lee Jae-myung, should be put on the table for discussion.

In addition, it was reported that they demanded not only an apology from the President for vetoing a bill promoted by the opposition party, but also a ‘special prosecution by Chae Sang-byeong’.

Although an agreement in principle was reached to “discuss both public livelihood policies and major national affairs issues,” the general view is that it is a burdensome agenda for the President’s Office to accept.

Ahead of the meeting, the People Power Party commented, “Now is the time to put the people and their livelihood first,” which is interpreted as an indirect criticism of the Democratic Party for demanding an agenda that could easily lead to political conflict.

Although negotiations are going through difficulties, the Democratic Party has continued its ‘hard-line mode’ by repeatedly pressing for the passage of the ‘Special Prosecutor Chae Sang-byeong Act’.

“We must pass the Special Prosecutor Act before the end of the 21st National Assembly and begin to uncover the truth. This is the will of the people expressed in this general election.”

The two sides meet again in two days, and the key is assessed to be how much the President’s Office accepts the Democratic Party’s demands and whether the Democratic Party also shows a forward-looking attitude.

Considering the possibility of progress in working-level discussions and Representative Lee’s trial schedule, the meeting is expected to be pushed to next week.
