The High-ranking Public Officials Crime Investigation Office is investigating Kang Mi-jeong, spokesperson for the New Fatherland Innovation Party, as a witness this morning regarding suspicions of corruption by Prosecutor Lee Jeong-seop, former second deputy chief of the Suwon District Prosecutors’ Office.

It is known that after the general election, the Corruption Investigation Office requested Spokesperson Kang Mi-jeong, who is also Prosecutor Lee’s brother-in-law, to attend and adjusted the schedule for today.

Spokesperson Kang is reported to have said, “We plan to actively cooperate with the investigation by the Corruption Investigation Office, including various materials,” and added, “I do not yet know to what extent the Corruption Investigation Office has the will to investigate.”

Previously, the Democratic Party filed a complaint against Prosecutor Lee Jeong-seop to both the prosecution and the Corruption Investigation Investigation Agency after raising suspicions of misconduct such as “falsely registering children, entertaining conglomerates, and leaking official secrets” during the National Assembly audit in October of last year.

Then, in November of last year, the prosecution took the lead in search and seizure, and the Corruption Investigation Office only assigned the case.

As the Corruption Investigation Office, which seemed to be watching the prosecution’s investigation, began investigating Spokesperson Kang after the general election, there are speculations that the prosecution’s investigation may also speed up. It is known that the prosecution is also considering additional investigation into Spokesperson Kang.

In this case, if the Corruption Investigation Office requests the prosecution to transfer the case, the prosecution must comply in accordance with Article 24, Paragraph 1 of the Corruption Investigation Office Act.

Prosecutor Lee was suspended from his duties after the impeachment bill was passed in the National Assembly at the end of last year, and is currently undergoing impeachment trial at the Constitutional Court.
