South Jeolla Province announced on the 25th that it had discovered an additional 1,023 independence activists who participated in the independence movement but did not receive awards due to lack of records or data and applied for awards to the Ministry of Patriots and Veterans Affairs.

Those who applied for the Order of Merit this time participated in the independence movement from before and after the Japanese invasion of national sovereignty in 1895 until 1945.

It was based on the list of prisoners, criminal cases, judgments, newspapers and local materials, documents from the Japanese Ministry of Foreign Affairs, lists of immigrants, and data on participation in independent fund raising.

Looking at the recipients of the Order of Merit by field, there are 152 people active in the volunteer army, 170 in the March 1st Movement, 221 in the student movement, 362 in the farmer and labor movement, and 118 in overseas activities.
The province previously found 80 independence activists who participated in the March 1st Movement and applied for awards, and 16 received awards.

For the past three years, Jeonnam Province has been conducting the first and second phase of discovering independence activists for the first time as a metropolitan government.

Governor Kim Young-rok said, “In order to inherit the identity of Jeollanam-do, we plan to compile a ‘History of the Jeonnam Independence Movement’ by collecting data on the activities of independence activists that have been discovered so far, and store and display the records at the ‘Namdo Volunteer Army History Museum’ that is being built.” .
