(Chungnam = International News) Reporter Park Eui-gyu = South Chungcheong Province announced on the 25th that it requested the President’s Local Committee to smoothly implement the president’s regional pledges, such as the creation of the Garolim Bay National Marine Ecological Park.

According to the province, from the 24th to this day, about 20 people, including provincial policy planning officer Jeong Chan-hyung, local era committee planning director Cho Bong-eop, and Oh Yong-jun, director of planning and management at the Chungnam Research Institute, attended the ‘presidential region’ from the provincial office, Gongju, Seosan, and Asan, etc. A ‘pledge explanation and site visit’ was conducted.

This on-site visit was designed as an opportunity to listen to and communicate with local voices for the purpose of launching the Local Era Committee, ‘realizing a local era in which people can live comfortably anywhere in Korea.’

Previously, President Yoon Seok-yeol formed the Special Committee for Balanced Regional Development for the first time in the history of the transition committee and carried out the construction of the Chungcheong Inland Railway and the Central East-West Trans-Railway in South Chungcheong Provinces, construction of the Boryeong-Daejeon-Boeun Expressway, relocation of public institutions in Chungnam Innovation City, creation of Garorimman Marine Ecological Park, and Asan. They promised 7 major pledges and 15 major policy tasks, including the establishment of a police hospital.

The committee, which visited Gongju City on the first day, toured sites such as the development of tourist resources utilizing Baekje culture and the construction of the 2nd Geumgang Bridge, and then moved to the provincial office to listen to the status of the ‘Bay Valley Mega City construction’, which was approved by the 8th popularly elected provincial governor first.

Next, strategies for implementing priority policy tasks such as △creating a global marine leisure tourism city △expanding metropolitan three-dimensional transportation networks such as construction of railways and highways △relocating public institutions to Chungnam Innovation City △establishing a new local medical school and Naepo University Hospital △establishing the National Dental Research Institute in Cheonan, etc. Implementation plans were discussed.

At this meeting, the province requested a plan to grant priority selection (draft system) to Naepo New Town, which is related to the relocation of public institutions, as there has been no follow-up government policy since it was designated as a secondary innovation city in October 2020.

For the establishment of a new regional medical school, it was proposed to prioritize the establishment of a national university medical school in non-metropolitan province-level areas (Chungnam, Jeonnam, and Gyeongbuk) and the establishment of a university hospital in Naepo New Town.

The establishment of the Dental Research Institute in Cheonan was a promise made by the President to South Chungcheong Province, and he requested that it be promoted without a public offering process and that the central government, centered on the local regional committee, continue to show interest and provide support.

On the second day, we toured sites such as Garorim Bay National Marine Ecological Park, early connection of the Seohae Line and Gyeongbu High-Speed Line (KTX) at Asan Inju Station, and the construction of Asan Police Hospital.

The province is pursuing a project to create a national marine ecological park to transform Garorim Bay, the country’s first and largest marine life protection area, which belongs to the southwest coast mudflat, one of the world’s five largest mudflats, into a luxury ecological space where nature, humans, the sea, and life come together.

The promotion strategy for this is △healthy sea environment △marine ecology experience base △regional coexistence, etc., and a total project cost of 123.6 billion won is planned to be invested.

Major projects include the construction of the Garorim Bay Conservation Center, the creation of the West Sea Tidal Flat Ecological Park, the construction of a spotted seal observation center, the creation of an ecological trail, and the development and operation of an ecological trail.

The Ministry of Strategy and Finance is currently conducting a feasibility study on the Garorim Bay National Marine Ecological Park, and it is expected that a decision will be made soon on whether or not it will pass.

As the design cost of 2 billion won is reflected in this year’s government budget, the province plans to push ahead with the project in earnest, including starting design immediately after passing the feasibility study.

Policy Planning Director Jeong Chan-hyung said, “We are grateful for listening to the diverse voices of the region in order to support the smooth implementation of the President’s regional pledges.” He added, “The province is creating an ‘era of regional areas where people can live in Korea’ by securing public trust in regional development and government policies.” “I will do my best to make it a reality,” he said.

Cho Bong-eop, planning director of the Local Era Committee, said, “We will work together to overcome the crisis of regional extinction while considering the tasks of South Chungcheong Province, which took the first field trip to realize the local era,” and added, “It is a place to collaborate and share with cities and provinces for regional development.” “We will prepare more,” he replied.
