(Chungnam = International News) Reporter Eui-gyu Park = South Chungcheong Province announced both domestically and internationally its intention to foster quantum industry, which is a core field of high-tech industry and is expected to have enormous ripple effects across all areas of society, including the economy, defense, and security.

On the 25th, the province held the ‘Chungnam Quantum Science and Technology Development Forum’ hosted by the Future Quantum Convergence Forum and the Chungnam Research Institute at the main auditorium of the Chungnam Library, and promoted △ combining quantum technology with the province’s main manufacturing industry △ nurturing quantum researchers △ utilizing quantum-related technologies in the defense sector △ quantum industry. They announced that they were exploring ways to create an ecosystem.

The forum on this day was attended by Vice Governor Jeon Hyeong-sik, Future Quantum Convergence Forum Chairman Lee Jong-sik, as well as national research institutes such as the Korea Institute of Advanced Science and Technology (KIAS), Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science (KRISS), Electronics and Telecommunications Research Institute (ETRI), and Korea Institute of Industrial Technology (KITECH). With the attendance of about 200 people, including experts from industry, academia, and research on quantum science and technology, including professors at Kongju National University, Kyunghee University, and the Korea Military Academy, and audience members, the event was held in the order of keynote presentation, topic presentation, and discussion.

First, in the keynote presentation, Baek Seung-wook, director of the Korea Research Institute of Standards and Science’s Quantum National Technology Strategy Center, introduced domestic quantum science and technology policies and strategic directions.

Center Director Baek said, “Continued investment and strategic support for quantum science and technology at the national level are essential,” and “We must lead future industries by applying quantum computing to semiconductor manufacturing processes, autonomous vehicle driving, medical care, safety, and national security.” “We do it,” he emphasized.

In the theme presentation, Professor Wookjae Lee of Kongju University spoke about the direction of establishing a quantum innovation ecosystem centered on Chungcheongnam-do and said, “In order to create a quantum industry ecosystem suited to the characteristics of Chungcheongnam-do, efforts should be made to build relevant infrastructure and foster talent that can integrate quantum technology with industry, academia, and research.” “Do it,” he advised.

Professor Yeon Seung-ho of Kyung Hee University said about the plan to foster quantum research personnel, “What is more serious than the gap in artificial intelligence (AI) and quantum computer technology, which is the future food, is the lack of talent.” He added, “Expansion of quantum graduate schools, new or expanded quantum-related departments, and creation of quantum research jobs in the public sector.” “We need to foster quantum manpower,” he said, suggesting the direction for manpower development.

Professor Jeong Geun-hong of the Korea Military Academy said in a presentation on ways to integrate quantum science and technology in the defense field, “Countries around the world are investing heavily in the development of quantum weapon systems,” and added, “Securing the foundation for defense quantum technology and technology at the level of advanced countries for future defense superiority.” “Securing it is essential,” he said.

In the subsequent discussion chaired by Professor Kim Jae-wan of the Institute for Advanced Study, the possibility of combining quantum science and technology with the province’s main manufacturing industry was reaffirmed.

In addition, time was spent exploring preemptive measures to create a quantum ecosystem in Chungcheongnam-do, including the impact of the quantum science and technology industry on the local economy and necessary policy support.

Currently, the province is taking various measures to create an ecosystem for the quantum science and technology industry in Chungcheongnam-do, including discovering demonstration tasks for applying quantum technology, promoting a project to foster quantum technology experts, conducting research on strategies to foster the quantum science and technology industry in Chungnam, and enacting ordinances for fostering and supporting the quantum industry in the second half of the year. I’m trying hard.

Deputy Governor Jeon said, “Quantum science and technology in the fields of quantum communication, computing, and sensors are a game changer for future industries and can be combined with Chungcheongnam-do’s main industries such as mobility, semiconductors, and displays to create new growth engines for the future.” “We will gather our efforts and lay the institutional foundation so that South Chungcheong Province can create a quantum-related industrial ecosystem,” he said.
