Gyeonggi Province is pushing forward with the urban regeneration project around Jeongok Station in Yeoncheon-gun in connection with Paleolithic tourism resources.

According to Gyeonggi Province on the 26th, the province finally approved the ‘Yeoncheon-gun Jeongok-eup Urban Regeneration Revitalization Plan (draft) submitted by Yeoncheon-gun on the 25th after deliberation by the Urban Regeneration Committee.

Previously, Jeongok-eup in Yeoncheon-gun was selected as the target site for the government’s urban regeneration project in the second half of 2023 by the Urban Regeneration Special Committee of the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport last year.

This revitalization plan promotes prehistoric specialized projects in connection with Paleolithic tourism resources, with the vision of ‘Go to a new future! Jeongok, a city specializing in prehistoric times!’

The province plans to create Jeongok Play Park, a themed amusement facility using the concept of prehistoric relics, and to attract family tourists by collaborating with the Korea Educational Broadcasting Corporation (EBS) to discover educational content and develop characters.

In addition, Jeongok-ro, Ongol-ro, and Jeongokyeok-ro are planned to be developed as specialized streets to further enhance the city’s appearance as a city specializing in prehistory.

Yeoncheon-gun was the first to establish an urban regeneration strategic plan in 2021, and has now established a revitalization plan as it was selected for a government contest. Accordingly, the urban regeneration project will be promoted for four years from 2024 to 2027.

The province has been providing financial support and expert consulting for the urban regeneration strategies and revitalization plans established by cities and counties since 2018 so that they can actively pursue urban regeneration projects.

Kim Tae-soo, head of the provincial urban regeneration department, said, “We will continue to conduct on-site monitoring and consulting to ensure that the projects selected in the public offering can be implemented smoothly,” and added, “We will not spare any administrative and financial support to revitalize the declining areas of the original downtown.”

Meanwhile, since 2017, the province has achieved the success of 66 sites being selected for the government’s urban regeneration project contest, the largest number in the country. Currently, the province is pursuing urban regeneration projects in 79 places, including 13 Gyeonggi-do-type urban regeneration projects.
