A man in his 50s who disappeared with a suitcase left inside a subway train by a Japanese tourist was caught by the police.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s subway police unit announced on the 26th that it arrested Mr. A, a man in his 50s, on the 17th on charges of embezzlement of stolen property. All 30 million won in cash and 507,000 yen (about 4.5 million won) contained in the bag were also recovered.

According to the police, Mr. A is suspected of taking the suitcase left by the victim on subway line 1 at around 6:22 a.m. on the 14th and stealing the cash inside.

The police began an investigation the next day after receiving a report that a suitcase containing cash and yen had been lost. As a result of analyzing video data from about 80 closed-circuit televisions (CCTVs), about 30 from Jongno 3-ga Station on Line 1 to Dongducheon Station, it was confirmed that the victim left his suitcase behind at Kwangwoon University Station.

When Mr. A, who was riding the same train, arrived at Yangju Station, he got off with the suitcase that the victim had left behind.

The police identified Mr. A, tracked his movements, and arrested him at his residence within a day. A total of 34.5 million won was confiscated, including 15 million won in stored gold, 507,000 yen, and 15 million won deposited into a bank account.

Mr. A reportedly told the police, “I used pliers to open the lock and took out the contents, including cash.”

On the 24th, the police returned the recovered damaged goods to the victim who returned to Korea. The victim expressed gratitude, saying, “Thanks to the Korean police, I am happy to have recovered the damaged items.”

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s subway police unit advised that if you find lost items from a train, you should leave them at the police station or station office or report them to 112.
