(Uijeongbu = Yonhap News) Reporter Noh Seung-hyuk = The Gyeonggi-do Health and Environment Research Institute announced on the 26th that it will conduct a soil pollution survey in 2024 targeting areas with concerns about soil pollution, including areas where accidents and complaints occurred, from May to October.

The target of the investigation is a total of 305 locations, including the fire area following the water pollution accident in Gwanri Stream, Yanggam-myeon, Hwaseong-si.

Among these, the major pollution sources are 202 places, including industrial complexes, factory areas, and transportation-related facility areas, accounting for 66.2%.

In particular, this year’s survey targets included 21 locations where heavy metal and fluorine concentrations exceeded 70% of the soil pollution concern standards or other pollutant concentrations exceeded 40% in last year’s soil pollution survey.

It also included a survey of residential areas around industrial complexes, areas with groundwater contamination, and areas where factory wastewater inflows.

The investigation method is to excavate and collect surface and deep soil, analyze a total of 23 soil contaminants, including heavy metals, oil, and organic solvents, and immediately notify the relevant city/county.

Cities and counties in areas exceeding soil contamination concerns plan to take measures to have land owners restore contaminated soil through detailed investigations and administrative measures such as soil cleanup orders.

The results of the survey are verified and analyzed by the National Institute of Environmental Research and are disclosed on the Soil and Groundwater Information System (https://sgis.nier.go.kr) operated by the Ministry of Environment.
