[광주전남일보=정재춘 기자] A forum for discussion is opened to ask fundamental questions about Korea’s teacher appointment system. It is expected that frank discussions will take place on ways to strengthen teacher expertise in line with the upcoming future education environment and the limitations of the current system.

Jeollanam-do Office of Education (Superintendent Kim Dae-jung) will attend the ‘2024 Korea Glocal Future Education Expo’ held at the Yeosu World Expo from May 29 to June 2, and former Singapore National Institute of Education (NIE) President Tan Woon-seng will give a speech on ‘teacher training and teacher expertise.’ He announced that he would give a lecture on the topic of ‘development’.

The National Institute of Education (NIE), Singapore’s only teacher training university, is considered to have the world’s best teacher training system. NIE does not simply focus on training teachers, but focuses on the continuous professional development of teachers through overall research and development related to education.

Former President Tan Woon Seng cited ‘teacher expertise’ as a key driving force that enabled Singapore to grow into a global education power despite limited resources and a population of only 6 million, and suggested the role and direction of teachers who will lead future education. Is expected.

In his lecture held on June 2, he will look into the secrets of Singapore’s educational field, an educational powerhouse, including Singapore’s teacher training system △ teacher professionalism diagnosis and evaluation system △ direction of public education △ partnership between universities (NIE), Ministry of Education and schools △ school teaching methods, etc. There is a lot of interest both inside and outside the educational community.

In particular, Korea adopts an appointment system in which teachers are qualified as teachers through a ‘competitive examination to select candidates for appointment’ after graduating from a college of education or a teacher’s college, and Singapore’s unified and specialized teacher training system has many implications.

In fact, Singapore’s NIE operates continuous retraining, graduate school courses, and teacher leadership programs for teachers entering the teaching profession. In order to increase teachers’ expertise, educational performance is diagnosed and evaluated on a regular basis, and various support and management are systematically provided. This is an example of institutionally establishing the long-standing philosophy in the education world that ‘the quality of education cannot exceed the quality of teachers.’

Educational leaders participating in the lecture on this day agree that it is time for improvement in Korea’s current hiring system, which is a line-up competitive exam, and discuss the direction of a desirable teacher training model.

Superintendent Kim Dae-jung said, “The future education environment is changing rapidly, including a decrease in the number of students and the introduction of digital education, so we need to establish a teacher appointment and training system appropriate for this.” He added, “As the capabilities of teachers are important in nurturing future talent, healthy discussions in this regard are necessary.” “I hope it comes true,” he said.

The keynote lecture in the conference section of this Glocal Future Education Expo will also be broadcast live on YouTube for visitors who cannot come to the site.

Meanwhile, the ‘2024 Korea Glocal Future Education Expo’ held at the Yeosu World Expo for five days from May 29 to June 2 will feature a variety of programs such as conferences, future classrooms, future education exhibitions, cultural and artistic exchanges, and future education festivals.
