Major General Daniel Hagari, the Israeli military’s chief spokesman, said in a briefing this evening, the 45th day of the war, that “we have confirmed that a mosque near Zaytoun in Gaza City was used as a weapons manufacturing facility (by Hamas).”

He explained, “The soldiers entered the mosque and checked to see if there were booby traps. Afterwards, they found a tunnel and went down the stairs to a basement, which was a workshop for making rockets.”

Director Haragi claimed, “Terrorists were making rockets and drones at the mosque. They were using Islam and its symbols to create terrorism.”

He also said that he engaged in a ‘face-to-face battle’ with Hamas’ Zaitoun battalion, and emphasized that the Israeli army had the upper hand in all battles.

Major General Hagari added, “Israeli forces destroyed many of Hamas’ rocket and weapons production facilities near Zaytoun and obtained information.”

The Israeli military, which began ground warfare in the northern part of the Gaza Strip in earnest at the end of last month, took control of Al-Shati Refugee Camp and Al-Shifa Hospital, west of Gaza City.

During the search of Al Shifa Hospital, a space believed to have been used as Hamas’ operational headquarters and a 55-meter long underground tunnel were discovered.

The Israeli military later expanded the area of ​​urban warfare to include Zaitoun and Jabalia, located in central and southern Gaza City.
