All pediatric dialysis doctors at Seoul National University Hospital resign
The only pediatric dialysis room in Korea is Seoul National University Hospital.

Professors Kang Hee-kyung and Ahn Yo-han, Department of Pediatrics and Nephrology, Seoul National University Hospital

“The doctors’ strike led to the resignation of professors, and the people became hostages. Are the patients hostages?”

The departure of professors from the hospital is becoming visible, with two professors from the Department of Pediatrics and Nephrology at Seoul National University Hospital submitting letters of resignation in opposition to the government’s policy of increasing the number of medical schools. In particular, the anxiety of seriously ill patients, including cancer patients, and their guardians reached its peak.

According to the medical community, on the 25th, professors at medical schools across the country, including the ‘Big 5’ hospitals, will begin resigning from this day depending on the circumstances of each hospital and department.

In particular, patients’ concerns are growing as professors at Seoul National University Hospital, which runs the only pediatric and adolescent kidney disease center in Korea, are leaving. According to the medical community, Professors Kang Hee-kyung and Ahn Yo-han of the Department of Pediatrics and Nephrology at Seoul National University Hospital have informed patients since the 28th of last month that they will only work until August 31st.

An anonymous community blind posted, “50-60% of child patients nationwide have received treatment from these two professors at Seoul National University Hospital,” and “an unimaginable and extreme thing has happened to a child patient who needs dialysis several times a week.” This came up.

The author said, “Even on the battlefield, we try to protect children. It is human reason and final instinct,” and added, “We are seeing the extreme end of how ugly humans can become.”

A notice posted at Seoul National University Hospital stated, “Our desired resignation date is August 31. We would like to send patients to a trustworthy pediatric nephrologist, so please let us know when you decide on the hospital of your choice.” There are 6 hospitals in Seoul with specialists who can treat pediatric kidney disease, including 3 in the Gangbuk area and 3 in the Gangnam area, 7 in the Gyeonggi area, and 9 in other areas.

The Pediatric Nephrology Department provides dialysis treatment for children with chronic kidney disease weighing less than 35 kg. It is reported that there are about 50 to 60 pediatric patients receiving dialysis across the country. Currently, there are two professors in the Pediatric Nephrology Department at Seoul National University Hospital, who provide treatment for more than half of the patients, and Seoul National University Hospital is the only hospital in Korea with a dialysis room specifically for children.

Medical school professors have submitted letters of resignation in opposition to the government’s medical reform, including the expansion of medical school admissions, and according to civil law, it is believed that the letters of resignation become effective after one month.

After an online general meeting on the 23rd, the National Medical University Professors’ Emergency Response Committee (Jeonuibi) said, “We reaffirmed that resignations will begin on April 25th as scheduled,” and “We will proceed regardless of the government’s resignation acceptance policy.” About 20 medical schools across the country are participating in the Jeonuibi.

An emergency response committee member of the Faculty Council of Seoul National University College of Medicine and Seoul National University Hospital also stated, “The four emergency committee leaders will actually leave the hospital starting May 1.” The Seoul National University Medical School Professor Emergency Committee includes professors from four hospitals, including Seoul National University Hospital, Seoul National University Bundang Hospital, Seoul Boramae Hospital, and Seoul National University Hospital Gangnam Center.

The Emergency Response Committee of the Ulsan Medical School Faculty Council announced that they would proceed with resignations from the 25th, taking into account the status of medical treatment and surgery reservations, and announced that professors who were unable to resign immediately would take a break once a week from May 3. Ulsan College of Medicine has Asan Medical Center in Seoul, Ulsan University College of Medicine, and Gangneung Asan Medical Center as training hospitals.

The Emergency Response Committee of Yonsei University College of Medicine professors, whose teaching hospitals include Severance Hospital, Gangnam Severance Hospital, and Yongin Severance Hospital, held a temporary all-faculty meeting the day before at Yonsei University College of Medicine’s Yoon In-bae Hall in Seodaemun-gu, Seoul, Gangnam Severance Hospital’s main auditorium, and Yongin Severance Hospital’s main auditorium on the 30th. We decided to voluntarily take a day off from work.

The Sungkyunkwan University Medical School Faculty Emergency Response Committee also announced the day before that it would distribute and implement the ‘Professor Appropriate Work Recommendation’, which includes designating a day without treatment such as outpatient treatment, procedures, or surgery as a non-working day once a week. The purpose is to maintain the quality of medical care, protect patient safety, and prevent professors from dying from overwork. Sungkyunkwan University School of Medicine has the Department of Basic Medicine, Samsung Seoul Hospital, Gangbuk Samsung Hospital, and Samsung Changwon Hospital as training hospitals.

The Emergency Response Committee of the Catholic University Medical School Faculty Council plans to submit resignation letters from professors from eight hospitals to the dean of Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital on the 26th. The Catholic University of Korea Medical School Faculty Association is comprised of professors from eight hospitals, including Seoul St. Mary’s Hospital, Yeouido St. Mary’s Hospital, Eunpyeong St. Mary’s Hospital, Uijeongbu St. Mary’s Hospital, Bucheon St. Mary’s Hospital, St. Vincent’s Hospital, Incheon St. Mary’s Hospital, and Daejeon St. Mary’s Hospital.

Bang Jae-seung, chairman of the emergency committee of the Seoul National University Professors’ Association, said, “Resignation letters are the last card professors can use.”
