A Korean man in his 50s was arrested for carrying a suitcase containing 30 million won that a Japanese tourist had left on the subway. Fortunately, all the money in the bag was recovered and returned to its owner.

The Seoul Metropolitan Police Agency’s subway police unit announced on the 26th that it had arrested a man in his 50s, Mr. A, on charges of embezzlement of property left behind by a Japanese tourist in a subway train.

The Japanese tourist who lost his bag is known to have brought a total of 34.5 million won, including won and yen, into the bag in order to buy fabric for performance clothes in Korea as an actor in the traditional Japanese theater ‘Kabuki’.

According to the police, a Japanese tourist left his bag in a train at Kwangwoon University Station in Seoul on Seoul Metropolitan Subway Line 1 on the 14th. Mr. A found the bag and took it with him as he got off at Yangju Station in Gyeonggi Province.

The police tracked Mr. A’s movements through CCTV, etc., identified him, and arrested him at his residence on the 17th.

Of the money in the bag, the police recovered a total of 34.5 million won, including 15 million won that Mr. A had deposited into his bank account.

On the 24th, the police returned cash and goods to a Japanese tourist who visited Korea again. The Japanese tourist thanked the police at the scene and sent an email to thank them again after returning to Japan.
