Citizen and patient groups are continuing to criticize the Special Committee on Medical Reform under the President (ⓒYoung Doctors).

There is a series of criticisms that the President’s Special Committee on Medical Reform is insufficient to solve not only the medical crisis but also essential and regional medical problems.

The People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy issued a statement on the 26th, pointing out the formation of the Special Committee on Medical Reform and asserting that the government is attempting to privatize medical care while promoting ‘medical reform’ in name only.

People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy said, “If you look at the members who attended the first meeting and the composition of the committee, it appears that the emphasis is on medical industrialization, not medical reform,” and added, “Chairman Noh Yeon-hong is the current president of the Korea Pharmaceutical and Biotechnology Association and has led medical industrialization during the Lee Myung-bak administration. I have experience. Above all, he has no connection to or expertise in local or essential medical care. Rather, he pointed out, “He is an expert in revitalizing the pharmaceutical and bio industry.”

People’s Solidarity for Participatory Democracy said, “The composition of the committee is heavily biased toward providers, with 10 medical providers, 5 subscribers, and 5 experts,” adding, “Among the experts, the Korea Development Institute (KDI), a government-affiliated organization that promotes medical industrialization, is included. “Many of the 20 civilian members are spokespeople for medical providers, hospital capital, and medical industrialization,” he said.

Regarding government members, “The Minister of Strategy and Finance participated, and the Ministry of Strategy and Finance is pushing for deregulation for medical industrialization, including the establishment of the Service Industry Advancement Committee,” he said. “The reality of the Yoon Seok-yeol government’s Special Committee on Medical Reform is the ‘Medical Industrialization Committee’ led by the Ministry of Strategy and Finance.” “It’s no different,” he said.

Accordingly, he urged the reorganization of a social consensus organization to resolve regional and essential medical issues.

The Korea Cancer Patients’ Rights Association said that the Special Committee on Medical Reform should take an active role in resolving the medical crisis triggered by the increase in the number of medical school students.

The Cancer Patients’ Rights Council said, “The government plans to continue discussing unnecessary issues in the Medical Reform Special Committee, which is composed of members who suit the tastes of the Ministry of Health and Welfare, without the medical community, which is a direct stakeholder,” and added, “Patients have nowhere to go, but they are discussing policies that are far from the current situation.” “We just want to proceed,” he said.

The Cancer Patients Rights Council said, “What is the meaning if the special committee cannot resolve the legislative standoff? “Right now, the priority is to come up with measures to deal with the medical collapse,” he said. “We need to make public the list of professors who resigned, provide support for patients to make treatment plans, and find a way to end the situation.”

At the same time, he said, “We should discuss stopping the once-a-week shutdown of university hospitals, but is it really reasonable to discuss improving the training environment for residents who are not returning?” and “The government should focus on preparing policies to protect patients instead of the useless Special Committee on Medical Reform.” “He said.
