Although the government has reduced the increase in medical school admissions quota by up to half next year to allow new students to be recruited, most of the 23 private universities, except Ulsan University Medical School, are expected to apply for 100% of the allocated number of students. On the other hand, all nine national universities plan to participate in a voluntary reduction of up to 50%, so the number of medical school students is expected to increase by 1,500 to 1,600 next year.

According to Dong-A Ilbo’s coverage on the 25th, four universities, including Gachon University, Yeungnam University, Keimyung University, and Daegu Catholic University, applied to the University Education Council on the 24th for deliberation on changing the implementation plan for college admissions that 100% reflects the increase in medical school quota. In accordance with the Enforcement Decree of the Higher Education Act, universities must reflect changes in their quota in school regulations and apply for review of the change to the Korea University Association. Accordingly, 130 students will be admitted to Gachon University Medical School, where 40 students were admitted this year, next year.

Dongguk University, Dong-A University, and Inje University have not applied for review of changes to the Korea University Education Association, but they plan to reflect 100% of the increase in medical schools, and the prevailing mood is that Konyang University will also reflect all increases in medical schools. Although 14 private universities said they were still “discussing whether to reduce the number of students,” there was a strong internal feeling that “we cannot miss this opportunity for the first time in 27 years to increase the number of medical school students,” so it is expected that most will apply for all assigned seats.

Among private universities, only Ulsan University, which has Asan Medical Center in Seoul as its teaching hospital, is considering voluntary downsizing. The current number of students at Ulsan University is 40, and the number of students assigned last month for next year is 120. Ulsan University is considering a plan to reduce the number of students increased by 10 to 50 percent.

On the other hand, it is reported that nine national universities will reduce the increase in admissions by 50%. Kangwon National University, Kyungpook National University, Gyeongsang National University, Chungnam National University, Chungbuk National University, and Jeju National University, which proposed voluntary reductions, all plan to reduce the number of personnel increases by half. It is reported that Pusan National University, Chonbuk National University, and Chonnam National University, which were not named in the proposal, will also participate in the voluntary reduction. An official from the Ministry of Education said, “All nine national universities are forming a consensus on voluntary reductions.” If all nine national universities reduce the number of students to be increased by 50%, the size of the increase will increase from the originally announced number of 2,000 to 1,597.

Private universities believe that as the government has announced a policy of full investment in facilities, etc., they must maintain the number of students to receive maximum support.

The Korea University Association, which accepts applications for changes to the college admissions implementation plan until the end of April every year, decided to accept applications until the end of next month in consideration of the time it takes to reflect the increasing number of medical school students in school regulations. The process for increasing the number of medical schools is completed when the university that has been notified of the results after deliberation by the University Academic Council announces the results on its website.
