It is known that high-income earners live healthier lives than low-income earners. In fact, a domestic study found that high-income earners maintain a healthy life without getting sick by 11 years longer than low-income earners. Recently, a report was published that provides a glimpse into why rich people live healthy lives.

On the 25th, Hana Bank’s Hana Financial Management Research Institute published the ‘2024 Korean Wealth Report’, which analyzed the rich with financial assets of 1 billion won or more. According to the report, the average waking time of rich people was 6:44 a.m. and they slept an average of 7.3 hours a day. Compared to the general public, they slept 30 minutes less. Bedtime was approximately 11:30 PM, not past midnight.

According to the research team of Dr. Frank Chen of Harvard Medical School, good sleep habits that lower the risk of early death are ▲ sleeping 7 to 8 hours a day ▲ not waking up in the middle of the night ▲ having no trouble falling asleep more than twice a week ▲ more than 5 days a week Feeling well-rested after sleeping ▲ Do not take medication for a good night’s sleep. To maintain these habits, the sleep hormone melatonin must be secreted well, so it is ideal to go to sleep before 12 o’clock.

According to the report, 60% of rich people eat breakfast. The proportion of people eating breakfast was higher than that of the general public. Breakfast was mostly simple healthy foods such as squeezed juice, Greek yogurt, and nuts rather than rice.

Since everyone has a different lifestyle, it is difficult to say that breakfast is essential for everyone. However, eating breakfast has health benefits in that it prevents snacking and binge eating. In fact, a study by a research team at Imperial College London in the UK found that people who skip breakfast are more easily attracted to high-calorie foods and have a higher total daily calorie intake.

Rich people read about 10 books a year. This is 4 volumes more than the general public. In particular, super rich people with financial assets of more than 10 billion won were found to read about 20 books a year. The most preferred books were in the humanities and social sciences field, followed by novels and self-development books. The general public had a high preference for novels and self-improvement.

Reading is also beneficial to your health. This is because it improves mood and sleep habits and delays the onset of dementia or cognitive decline. In fact, a research team at Yale University followed 3,600 retirees for 12 years and found that people who read for more than 30 minutes a day had a 20% reduced risk of death.

When the general public and the rich were asked about their ‘overall life satisfaction’, 70% of the rich responded that they were satisfied, which is twice as many as the general public (35%). When total assets are less than 1 billion won, the satisfaction rate is 42%, less than half, but when total assets are about 3 billion won, 66% of respondents said they are satisfied, a 1.6-fold increase. As it approached 5 billion won, the rate of increase in satisfaction (71%) slowed, but beyond that, the number of satisfied people (67%) actually decreased.
