At around 6:40 am on the 3rd, a sinkhole (ground subsidence) occurred near the construction site of a new living accommodation facility near Naksan Beach, Ganghyeon-myeon, Yangyang-gun, Gangwon-do.

Some of the nearby convenience stores collapsed in the accident, and some of the water and sewage facilities were damaged. About 90 people, including vacationers staying at nearby accommodations, were evacuated, but fortunately no injuries were reported.

According to Yangyang County, the sinkhole that occurred on that day was 12m wide, 8m long, and 3m deep. At the time of the accident, the fire department reported that the “convenience store building was tilted” was reported.

A 76-year-old resident aunt said, “In the morning, I heard a ‘thump’ and something pouring, and when I checked it, a part of the convenience store building collapsed and split in two, and dust rose at that time. This is the place I’m looking for, but I’m really glad that there was no one there at that time, but it was a situation that could have caused serious casualties,” he said at the time.

On this day, near the site where the sinkhole occurred, construction of a new living accommodation facility is in progress. It has been confirmed that large and small sinkholes have been repeated several times since the beginning of this year, and at one time the construction was suspended.

Residents complained, “There have been several more incidents like this, such as a sinkhole that occurred this spring and the construction was halted.”

The police and Yangyang County are controlling the area around the accident site and carrying out emergency recovery, while investigating the exact cause of the accident.
