Super powerful Typhoon No. 11 ‘Hinnamno’… The ‘strongest typhoon’ in 20 years
--

The 11th typhoon ‘Hinnamno’ is approaching with a threatening force.

‘Hinnamno’ maintains the strongest ‘super-strong’ rating in the typhoon intensity classification. The radius of the typhoon’s strong winds is so large that it covers Korea. As of 4 p.m. today (1st), the central pressure is 920 hectopascals (hPa), and the strong winds accompanying the center are over 50 m/s.

Typhoons, which are low pressure, are stronger when the central pressure is lower. In addition, when winds of over 40 m/s blow, it has the power to blow away not only people but also rocks. This is the reason why worries about ‘Hin Nam-no’ are growing even before a career path has been decided.

■ Approaching the Korean Peninsula while maintaining a ‘very strong’ force

Currently, ‘Hinnamno’, located in the southeastern sea of Taiwan, will stay here until tonight. This is because the north wind is blowing from the Tibetan high pressure that has expanded to the west of the Korean Peninsula. However, the typhoon, which was pushed back by the north wind, will move north in earnest from tomorrow.

According to the Korea Meteorological Administration’s forecast, the typhoon will reach 30 degrees north latitude on the afternoon of the 5th, next Monday. After that, it will pass through the eastern sea of Jeju and then pass through the southern coast near Busan on the afternoon of the 6th.

Whether the typhoon makes landfall or not, it is expected to bring great rain and wind. This is because, while the typhoon moves north, it is expected to maintain a strong force as it passes through the hot sea with a water temperature of close to 30 degrees.

When approaching the Korean Peninsula, it will be lowered from the ‘super-strong’ level, but it will still approach as a ‘very strong’ force. When passing through the eastern sea of Jeju, the central pressure is still expected to be 945 hectopascals (hPa), and the central wind speed is expected to be around 45 m/s.

In the case of ‘Sara’ (1959), the most powerful typhoon that has affected Korea so far, the central pressure was 950 hectopascals (hPa), which is lower than that. In addition, the central pressure of Typhoon Maemi, which caused great damage in 2003, was 954 hectopascals (hPa) when it passed through Tongyeong, Gyeongnam.

■ The most powerful typhoon in 20 years… ‘Rain and wind’ are both menacing

The typhoon is projected to be the most powerful typhoon in nearly 20 years. This typhoon is predicted to be strong in both rain and wind.

Even though it was not directly affected by the typhoon, rain and wind have already begun in Jeju and the southern coast. The water vapor brought by the typhoon collides with the cold air above Korea, creating rain clouds.

The Korea Meteorological Administration has predicted 100 to 300 mm of rain in Jeju until the 3rd. In addition, up to 100 mm of rain will fall on the southern coast of Jeollanam-do and the coast of Gyeongnam.

When the typhoon begins to move north in earnest, the rain and wind are expected to become stronger.

Heavy rain of at least 500mm was predicted between the morning of the 5th and the 7th, centered on the coast or in the mountains. Precipitation per hour will also range from 50 to 100 mm. I am very worried because it has not even been able to recover from the ‘secondary rainy season’ not long ago.

Even though Korea is not in the ‘dangerous semicircle’ to the right of the typhoon’s course, the force of the typhoon is so strong that the maximum instantaneous wind speed will reach 50 m/s.

■ Track similar to Typhoon ‘Chaba’ in 2016

The typhoon that followed the path most similar to this typhoon was ‘Chaba’, the 2016 autumn typhoon. ‘Chaba’, which had an impact in late autumn, early October, sprayed more than 600mm of rain in the Jeju mountains. Nearly 400 mm of rain fell in the Yeongnam region as well. The strong winds were also strong enough to exceed 50 m/s.

Typhoon Chaba in 2016Typhoon Chaba in 2016

At that time, high-rise buildings in Haeundae, Busan, were flooded, and in Ulsan, a record heavy rain of 124 mm per hour flooded the Taehwa River, causing great damage. There were also 10 casualties.

This typhoon has a similar course to Chaba, but is analyzed to be stronger than Chaba. Areas affected in 2016 need thorough preparation this year.

In particular, in coastal lowlands, flood damage is feared due to backflow or river flooding caused by storm surges. As strong rain and wind are predicted in a situation where the ground is weakened due to the recent torrential rains, we must hurry to prepare in areas prone to landslides or habitually flooded.
