Losing to SK, 19th consecutive away game… “We have to hold out as much as we can with the players we have.”
(Seoul = Yonhap News) Reporter Lee Eui-jin = Seoul Samsung’s coach Eun Hee-seok, who recorded the longest losing streak in away games in professional basketball history, sighed, saying, “It is painful to see players missing due to injuries.”
Samsung lost 75-82 to SK in the 2023-2024 CheongKwanJang Professional Basketball Regular League away game held at Jamsil Student Gymnasium in Seoul on the afternoon of the 20th.
As a result, Samsung suffered the humiliation of being recorded as the team that lost the most away games in a row in the history of professional basketball, which was launched in 1997.
Daegu Dongyang in 1998-1999, SK in 2003, and Samsung in 2021-2022 recorded 18 consecutive away games. Samsung, launched under coach Eun Hee-seok, started losing in December last year and eventually became the team with the most consecutive losses.
In response to a question about the loss at the post-game press conference, Coach Eun said, “I keep saying it’s a problem with the player composition because I feel like I’m making an excuse now,” and added, “In any case, I had to hold out as much as possible until the players came back.”
Samsung has lost young strikers Shin Dong-hyuk, Jo Jun-hee, and Cha Min-seok, who would add to the team’s activity, due to injuries.
Coach Eun said, “I set the goal of quickly ending the losing streak and viewed today’s performance as particularly important,” and added, “Fortunately, today’s performance was not worse than last time’s performance. I think we will have to solve it somehow with the resources we have now.”
He also expressed his disappointment with Avan Nava, who is not performing as well as expected before joining the team.
Nava, who joined through the Asian quota system, is averaging 15 minutes this season and scoring 4.6 points.
Coach Eun said, “It must be said that it was my fault for not adapting to our basketball quickly,” and added, “He is a player of the level of Avan Nava, but the player who would have played the role of sixth man was Shin Dong-hyuk, but he is not there now anyway.”
He added, “Unlike the previous game, the players (today) had a very strong will to end the losing streak, and that was demonstrated well in the first quarter, but as a coach, I am sorry for not being able to continue until the end.”
