[OSEN=서정환 기자] Seoul Samsung rewrote professional basketball history. It’s a whopping 19 consecutive away losses.
Samsung suffered a 75-82 upset loss to Seoul SK in the ‘2023-24 Season CheongKwanJang Professional Basketball 2nd Round’ held at Jamsil Student Gymnasium on the 20th. Samsung, which has lost 8 games in a row, is in 9th place with 2 wins and 10 losses. The lowest ranked company is Korea Gas Corporation (1 win, 10 losses), which also lost 8 times in a row.
Samsung is the first team to lose 19 consecutive away games in the 26-year history of professional basketball. The previous record of 18 consecutive losses was held by three teams: Dongyang in the 1998-99 season, Seoul SK in 2003, and Samsung in the 21-22 season.
The start wasn’t bad. Samsung got off to a refreshing start with a 14-3 lead thanks to Kofi Coburn’s dunk and Lee Jung-hyun’s 3-pointer. Samsung maintained the lead until 21-9 in the second half of the first quarter.
But the lead did not last long. SK’s second unit, including Choi Boo-kyung and Choi Won-hyuk, added to the scoring and the score gap narrowed in an instant. Oh Se-geun’s successful free throw in the second half of the second quarter ultimately tied the score at 34-34. SK ended the first half with a 45-43 lead after Kim Sun-hyung’s buzzer beater.
Samsung, which resisted strongly until the third quarter, eventually collapsed in the fourth quarter. Samsung fell behind 67-78 with 2 minutes and 28 seconds left, effectively giving up the game. Director Eun Hee-seok said, “Try again now! “Try playing normally,” he ordered. However, it was impossible to overturn a game that had already gained momentum.
Samsung is failing in rebuilding due to the failure of Cha Min-seok and Lee Won-seok, who were selected first. Lee Jeong-hyeon and Kim Si-rae, who were recruited as free agents, are showing signs of aging. There is no competitive position compared to other teams.
Samsung will play two consecutive home games against Korea Gas Corporation and Hyundai Mobis and an away game against Suwon KT on November 26. Since KT is strong, there is a high possibility that Samsung will extend its away losing streak to 20 games. / [email protected]
