During the Chuseok holiday, the four major palaces, the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty, and the Jongmyo Shrine are open to the public for free. The four palaces are Deoksugung, Gyeongbokgung, Changgyeonggung, and Changdeokgung. The free opening period is from Friday, September 9th to Monday, September 12th. Instead of opening on Monday, it closes on Tuesday, September 13th. We took a closer look at cultural sites and events that you can visit for free during the holidays.

At Changgyeonggung Palace, the ‘Full Moon Descends to the Palace’ event is held in which a large model of the full moon is installed inside the palace for nighttime visitors. The full moon model will be installed from September 8 to September 12, 6:30 pm to 8:30 pm, around the Punggidae on the stairs of Yanghwadang in Changgyeonggung Palace.

Changdeokgung Palace is also open to the public for free. However, there is a fee for patronage inside Changdeokgung Palace. There are no daytime events at Changdeokgung Palace, and the ‘Moonlight Journey’ continues at night. It is an event where you can enjoy traditional art performances under the guidance of a professional commentator. Reservations must be made on the Interpark website. It lasts 90 minutes and costs 30,000 won per person. Currently, the first online ticket is sold out, and the canceled ticket will be released later, but the schedule has not been disclosed. Reservation by phone is only available to those 65 years of age or older, the disabled, and people of national merit.

Deoksugung and Gyeongbokgung can be visited free of charge during the daytime during Chuseok, but the ‘Gyeongbokgung night opening in the second half of 2022’ will be held for a fee. The first viewing period for the Gyeongbokgung Palace at night is from September 1 to September 30, and it is currently sold out.

You can visit Jongmyo Shrine and the royal tombs of the Joseon Dynasty for free during the Chuseok holiday. Jongmyo Shrine is a place where ancestral rites are held for the tablets of successive kings and queens of the Joseon Dynasty. It is located in Jongno and was registered as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1995.
