An Argentine news anchor confessed on live broadcast that she had been a victim of sexual violence as a child and supported the victims.

On the 24th (local time), the Washington Post (WP) reported that Juan Pedro Aleart, an anchor at Eltris TV, a local broadcaster in Rosario, Argentina, spoke about his experience of sexual abuse for 30 minutes on the flagship news program ‘Canal 3’ on the 18th. It was reported that he confessed his feelings through a text message and later said, “I was scared before the broadcast, but I felt free afterward.”

“I will tell you my story,” said Aleart, adding that he had been a victim of sexual abuse and violence since the age of six, and that the perpetrators were his father and uncle. In addition, his father revealed that he had sexually abused his younger sister after being diagnosed with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) positive, that is, acquired immunodeficiency syndrome (AIDS).

“I know how humiliating and embarrassing it feels,” Aleart said of male survivors of sexual abuse. “I also know that many have not been able to confide in their wives, children, friends or counselors. “There is,” he agreed.

“I want to say that the only way to heal is to verbalize the damage, talk about it, and blame the perpetrators,” he said, adding that he had also filed a complaint with the police against his father and uncle. Aleart’s father made an extreme choice after learning of the accusation, and his uncle, who was a professor at the National University of Rosario, was also reported to have been suspended immediately after the broadcast.

However, according to local reports, in response to Aleart’s confession, his brothers and sisters released a statement saying, “It is not right to unilaterally share our personal information on broadcast,” and “we have suffered secondary damage.”

However, local children’s aid organizations reported that requests for help increased rapidly after Aleart’s confession. “I think it is in the interests of the perpetrators to remain silent about this type of abuse,” said Silvia Roxana Piceda, co-founder of the Argentine civic group Adults for the Rights of Children. He emphasized that dealing with the problem is a global issue.

Sebastian Cuatromo, Piceda’s husband and co-founder of the group, said he was himself a victim of child sexual abuse. “It can be especially difficult for men to talk about their experiences because of stereotypes about their role in society,” he said. “I also find it difficult to relieve my shame,” he said. Still, she said, “change is happening as survivors speak out.”

Meanwhile, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), one in five women and one in 13 men worldwide have been sexually abused before the age of 18.
