MBC discusses ‘Israeli attack on U.S. mainland’ online misinformation communication review document
Decision to state opinions on YouTube videos related to Lee Jae-myung’s attack

The Korea Communications Standards Commission’s passport recommendation committee members argued that there was a need to strengthen review authority on online misinformation after MBC incorrectly reported that Israel had attacked the United States in its online edition over Israel’s attack on the Iranian mainland.

At the National Defense Commission’s Communications Deliberation Subcommittee held at the Broadcasting Hall in Yangcheon-gu, Seoul on the 25th, Commissioner Kim Woo-seok said, “If we cannot be held legally responsible for online misinformation, it is natural to discuss measures to prevent recurrence,” and added, “MBC’s report in question is actively correcting the portal article. “It was left unfulfilled, and I doubt whether MBC’s apology is sincere, and I feel ashamed that I can’t do anything about these things,” he pointed out.

Commissioner Lee Jeong-ok also said, “Communication review regulations are lagging behind reality,” adding, “The social chaos caused by online misinformation is huge, and there are concerns that this is being interpreted lightly.

It must be corrected urgently.

“MBC apologized two days after the false report,” he criticized.

Commissioner Heo Yeon-hoe also said, “How can Iran be mistaken as the United States? How can MBC send out such incorrect information?” and added, “We should at least make recommendations for improving self-regulation by revising the Telecommunications Review Regulations.”

However, member Seong-ok Yoon, recommended by the opposition party, said, “MBC Broadcasting did not misreport, but some information with errors occurred in the process of converting voice to text, and the business entity was iMBC, an information and communication service provider.” He added, “The problem that occurred technically was technical. “It can be corrected with action,” he said.

In response to this, subcommittee chairman Hwang Seong-wook summarized, “Since this is a reporting matter (not a matter for resolution), we will listen to the opinions of the committee members.”

Previously, MBC reported on Israel’s retaliatory attack on Iran’s Isfahan region on ’12 MBC News’, which aired at 12:19 p.m. on the 19th. There was no problem on the air, but on the online version, “Due to concerns about interest rate hikes in the United States, In addition, the phrase “(domestic stock market) is increasing in decline due to the news that an Israeli missile attacked the U.S. mainland.”

When this part became problematic, MBC changed the title and text to say, “Israeli missiles attacked mainland Iran,” at 1:47 p.m., about an hour and a half later.

Also, at the bottom of a recent article, “In the process of converting the broadcast into a digital article, incorrect titles and content were exposed.

We apologize for the confusion.

“We will be more careful to avoid such mistakes in the future and prepare measures to prevent recurrence,” he apologized.

Meanwhile, the Communications Subcommittee of the Defense Security Commission decided to make a statement of opinion on 44 videos related to the attack on Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, including Chosun Ilbo’s YouTube channel, on the premise of demanding corrections.

This is a complaint filed by the National Communication Committee of the Democratic Party of Korea regarding the contents of videos such as ‘Lee Jae-myung’s self-made drama’ and ‘Minor Injury’ for violating the ‘causing social chaos’ clause.
