A Spanish woman almost lost her life after drinking coffee from an airport vending machine. She drank the coffee without noticing the bug floating in it and went into anaphylactic shock.

According to Spanish media outlet Ultimahora on the 24th (local time), a Spanish woman, Ms. A (21), was rushed to the hospital after drinking coffee from a vending machine at Palma de Mallorca Airport on the 22nd. She drank the coffee without seeing the bugs floating in it, and her allergic reaction caused anaphylactic shock.

Anaphylactic shock refers to a phenomenon in which the body develops an hypersensitivity reaction to a specific substance. It is a serious allergic disease that causes symptoms throughout the body even when exposed to even a small amount. The causes are diverse, but common foods such as seafood, dairy products, and nuts can be the main causes. In adults, drugs or insects can also be the main causes.

Sometimes, related symptoms appear even in the absence of allergens. If treated immediately, recovery occurs without major problems, but if it is delayed, shortness of breath, low blood pressure, and loss of consciousness may occur, which can lead to death.

Mr. A said that he drank coffee without knowing that there were bugs floating around at the time, but felt that it tasted strange. Afterwards, I looked closely at the inside of the cup and found that it was swarming with bugs. From this point on, it was reported that she suddenly experienced symptoms of shock, such as her face swelling and her throat becoming blocked.

Mr. A, who had difficulty breathing, received first aid at the airport and was immediately taken to the hospital. She was later hospitalized in the intensive care unit for about 36 hours and has now been discharged. Mr. A filed a complaint against the airport, saying, “This happened because airport officials did not properly maintain the cleanliness of the vending machines.”
