Politico, a U.S. political media outlet, reported on the 25th (local time) that the United States is preparing to sign a contract for weapons and equipment worth $6 billion (approximately 8.2 trillion won) worth of additional support to Ukraine with a domestic defense company.
According to reports, this military aid package, which will be announced as early as the 26th, will include a Ukrainian security support budget worth $60.8 billion (approximately 84 trillion won), which was made possible by President Joe Biden’s signature on the 24th after passage by the U.S. Congress.
There is also ammunition and missiles for the High-Speed Maneuverable Artillery Rocket System (HIMARS) and Advanced Surface-to-Air Missile System (NASAMS).
However, it may take several years for Ukraine to actually receive these weapons, Politico reported.
The explanation is that the allocation and execution of the funds needed to procure these weapons are carried out in accordance with the ‘Ukraine Security Assistance Initiative (USAI).’
USAI does not use U.S. stock weapons, but rather supports the Department of Defense by purchasing weapons from defense companies.
Weapon contracts, production, and delivery inevitably take time.
U.S. Secretary of Defense Lloyd Austin is expected to announce this aid plan at a virtual meeting with the Ukraine Defense Liaison Group (UDCG), a consultative body of countries supporting Ukraine, on the 26th.
Previously, on the 24th, the United States announced that it would provide Ukraine with a weapons and equipment package worth $1 billion (about 1.4 trillion won) using its additional support budget for Ukraine.
