An accident occurred at an airport in Spain where a woman in her 20s almost lost her life after drinking coffee from a vending machine.

According to foreign media outlets such as the Spanish daily Ultimaora on the 24th (local time), the woman, Son Sant Joan (21), was rushed to the hospital after drinking coffee from a vending machine at Palma Airport on the island of Mallorca, eastern Spain.

On the 22nd, Joan, who works at an airline, got coffee from a vending machine. According to the testimony of his colleagues, he drank coffee without knowing that there were bugs floating around, but then noticed that it tasted strange. As soon as Joan swallowed the coffee, she looked inside the cup and found several dead bugs.

Afterwards, Joan suffered ‘anaphylactic shock,’ a severe allergic reaction. It refers to a phenomenon that causes an hypersensitivity reaction in the body to a specific substance.

It is a serious allergic disease that manifests symptoms throughout the body within minutes or hours even if only a very small amount is contacted. It causes systemic symptoms such as hives, sneezing, breathing difficulties, and paralysis. In some cases, swallowing or speaking may become difficult, breathing may become short and loud, or in severe cases, blood pressure may drop and cause fainting.

Digestive symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea may also appear, as well as anxiety and other symptoms such as feeling like you are going to die. Usually, it recovers without complications over time, but if left without proper treatment or measures, it can lead to organ damage or even death in severe cases.

The causes are diverse, but common foods such as seafood, dairy products, and nuts can be the main causes. In adults, drugs or insects can also be the main causes.

At that time, Joan suffered from breathing difficulties and was taken to the airport health center. The medical staff administered medication to the woman to relieve her shock symptoms. After being transferred to the hospital, he had to be admitted to the intensive care unit for 36 hours. It was reported that Joan, who received treatment, was discharged in the early morning of the 24th.

It is not yet known what type of bug was found in the coffee Joan drank.

Joan filed a complaint against the vending machine company, claiming that there was a risk to public health due to lack of proper facility management.

Meanwhile, the vending machine in question ceased operation after the incident and Palma Airport reportedly began an investigation into the incident.
