57% of adults read ‘0 books’ per year… “Should I read at least one book?”

Did you know that today (23rd) is ‘World Book Day’?

Events to distribute books were also held at Gwanghwamun Square and Hongik University entrance.

If you haven’t read a book before, why not read one this year?

I received the book along with a single pink rose.

This is a book dream event held on ‘World Book Day’ designated by the UNESCO General Assembly.

Choose one of a variety of books, including picture books and novels, and make a commitment to reading.

“I usually like books on management, economics, and self-development. Today, I chose a book I haven’t read before because I wanted to try it.”

Six out of ten Korean adults have not read a single book in the past year.

As a result of the ‘2023 National Reading Survey’, the overall reading rate is 43%.

Not only is it the lowest since the survey began, but the figure has plummeted over the past 10 years.

‘Not having time due to work’ and ‘media such as smartphones and games’ were cited as factors that hinder reading.

“About one book a year. If I just don’t think about it, I think I’ll read about one book.”

“I think I’m reading about two or three books. I should keep reading, but I’m losing priority…”

“The environment surrounding us that prevents us from reading books is an unchangeable law. Books are the only thing that can help us encounter countless wide and deep worlds that we have never experienced in our lives.”

The government has set a goal of increasing the adult comprehensive reading rate to 50% by 2028.

The plan is to increase the reading promotion budget that was cut, while organizing the system so that good books can be sold and distributed.
