The World Health Organization (WHO) announced on the 24th (local time) that at least 154 million lives have been saved through vaccination over the past 50 years.

WHO announced this in a press release jointly issued with the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF) and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation to mark World Immunization Week, saying, “6 lives are saved every minute through vaccination.” .

According to WHO, those who benefited most from vaccination were infants.

Among the 154 million people who survived life-threatening crises through vaccination, about 101 million were infants. Infant mortality rate has decreased by 40% over 50 years.

WHO introduced, “Measles vaccination has contributed the most to the reduction of infant mortality,” and “It will continue to play an important role, accounting for 60% of the lives saved through vaccination.”

The main vaccination targets are 14 diseases. These include diphtheria, meningitis, hepatitis B, Japanese encephalitis, measles, whooping cough, polio, rotavirus, tetanus, and tuberculosis.

In the case of polio, WHO expects that through vaccination, more than 20 million people will be able to walk without paralysis over 50 years, putting the disease on the verge of eradication.

WHO pointed out that during the COVID-19 pandemic, it was necessary to pay attention to cases of children who missed vaccinations as each country’s medical capacity was focused on responding to COVID-19.

WHO pointed out that there were 67 million children who did not receive one or more vaccines during the COVID-19 pandemic.

WHO said, “As of 2022, there are still 33 million children who have not received the two-dose measles vaccine,” and added, “The results of the vaccine are a reason to accelerate efforts to reach children who have not been vaccinated.”
