Gyeonggi Province has decided to hold the Global Startup Expo, the largest startup festival in September, and has begun preparations for the event. Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Province Economic and Science Promotion Agency launched an advisory committee to prepare for the ‘2024 Global Startup Expo’ and held the first meeting at the Gyeonggi Provincial Office on the 23rd.

The Gyeonggi-do Global Startup Expo is scheduled to be held simultaneously at the Gwanggyo Convention Center and the Pangyo Startup Campus from September 25th to 27th in collaboration with a global startup platform.

It was prepared to attract investment and advance into overseas markets for promising startups in order to create a ‘Korean startup paradise’, which is Gyeonggi Province’s vision for the 8th popular election. The province has selected the field of artificial intelligence, a recent technology trend, as the main theme of the expo, and plans to promote various programs such as insight seminars with prominent domestic and foreign figures, startup contests, and 1:1 meetups with global venture capital (VC) invitations.

At the first meeting of the advisory committee, 15 experts from various fields leading the domestic venture and startup ecosystem, including companies, associations, and academia, including Gyeonggi Province Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs Kim Hyun-gon and Gyeonggi Province Director Kang Seong-cheon, participated. Nam Min-woo, CEO and Chairman of Dasan Networks Co., Ltd., which started out as a first-generation venture start-up and grew into Korea’s No. 1 communications equipment company, was appointed as the first chairman.

Sang-yeop Seong, Chairman of the Venture Business Association, Gun-soo Yoon, Chairman of the Korea Venture Capital Association, Jeon Jeon-seong, Chairman of the Korea Accelerator Association, Young-ha Ko, Chairman of the Korea Angel Investment Association, Seong-jin Choi, CEO of Korea Startup Forum, Se-young Lee, Chairman of the Generative AI Startup Association, Ki-byeong Kim, Managing Director of Amazon Web Services, Hee-young Yoon, Naver Cloud Managing Director, Nvidia Managing Director Seo Wan-seok, GAIA (Gyeonggi-do Industry-Academic Association) Chairman Choi Jae-bung, and KAIST AI Graduate School Dean Jeong Song serve as representatives of each field.

At the meeting, committee members presented various opinions on the strategic direction and program planning of startup-centered events, creation of a startup ecosystem, and operation of differentiated events unique to Gyeonggi-do.

Kim Hyeon-gon, Gyeonggi Province’s Deputy Governor for Economic Affairs, said, “We will collaborate with overseas startup platforms to make it the best international event in Asia,” adding, “All startup officials will cooperate to discover, foster, and invest in startups so that the Korean startup ecosystem beyond Gyeonggi Province can be revitalized.” “I look forward to it,” he said.

Meanwhile, the province plans to operate an advisory committee on a quarterly basis to successfully host the global startup fair and accelerate preparations for events such as contest preliminaries.
