Chungnam TP begins CCU demonstration plant construction project to realize carbon neutrality

On the 22nd, Chungnam Techno Park (hereinafter referred to as Chungnam TP) launched the ‘Carbon Capture and Utilization (CCU) Demonstration Plant Construction Project to Secure a New Concept Energy Technology (Green All)’ that captures carbon dioxide constantly emitted from coal-fired power plants and converts it into energy. We are moving forward in earnest.

South Chungcheong Province produces electricity with more than half of the country’s coal-fired power plants. As the government plans to close coal-fired power plants in 2050, South Chungcheong Province is considering ways to utilize coal-fired power plant sites and achieve carbon neutrality.

This project, jointly promoted by Chungnam, Boryeong City, Chungnam TP, KIST, LG Chem, and Korea Midland Power, will build a large-scale demonstration plant in Boryeong, South Chungcheong Province and convert carbon dioxide generated from coal-fired power plants into Green All (Green All) through electrochemical conversion facilities and bio processes. It will be promoted until 2025 with the goal of demonstrating technology for conversion to hexanol, butanol, etc.

Green-ol, the final product of the demonstration plant, is a compound word of Green, meaning eco-friendly, and Alcohol, a chemical raw material, and can be linked to not only general fuel but also aviation fuel in the future. It is expected to contribute to securing sustainable aviation fuel (SAF) and responding to carbon regulations in the aviation sector in the future.

Jeon Yeong-no, head of the Chungnam TP Energy Center, said, “It is very meaningful to demonstrate Korea’s first large-scale electrochemical CO₂ conversion technology in Chungcheongnam-do, an area with a high concentration of coal-fired power plants and high-carbon industries,” and added, “We will continue to create an industrial ecosystem to achieve carbon neutrality in Chungcheongnam-do.” “I will work hard to lay the foundation for this,” he said.
