(Chuncheon = Yonhap News) Reporter Yang Ji-woong = The budget for the school electronic whiteboard supply project, which failed to pass the Gangwon Special Self-Governing Provincial Council threshold last year due to various controversies, has been reorganized this year and is attracting attention.

The Provincial Office of Education held a press briefing on the 25th and explained the allocation of 238.1 billion won in the first supplementary budget for 2024.

In addition, the provincial council also allocated a budget for the supply of electronic whiteboards, which was completely cut during the deliberation of the main education budget at the end of last year.

The scale is 15.1 billion won, similar to last year’s budget of 15.5 billion won.

The electronic whiteboard project raised various suspicions, including targeting specific companies, and was criticized by provincial council members in an administrative audit last year.

Gangwon-do Province has decided that there is a need for an audit regarding suspicions of preferential treatment and unfair support, and has begun a specific audit targeting the electronic whiteboard support project.

The design cost of 670 million won for the new construction of the Student Independence Movement Memorial Hall and the project cost of 2.6 billion won for the relocation of the Pyeongchang Education Library were also included in this supplementary budget.

These are also budgets that were completely cut by the provincial council last year.

The Provincial Audit Committee has been conducting a specific audit since early this year in recognition of the need to audit suspicions of preferential treatment and unfair support for the Provincial Office of Education’s 2023 IT equipment and electronic whiteboard support project and the Unification Education Group’s private subsidy support project.

Lim Jae-wook, head of the budget department, said, “We started preparing the supplementary budget with the expectation that the results of the provincial audit would be released by March, but we determined that it would be difficult to supply schools this year if we missed the timing, so we set the budget. Electronic whiteboards are a necessity for digital and AI education.” .

He added, “We will first submit the budget to the provincial council and wait for the lawmakers’ decision.”

If this supplementary budget bill passes the Provincial Council, this year’s budget for the Provincial Office of Education will amount to 4.29 trillion won, an increase of about 6% from the original.

The budget plan was prepared with a focus on building an educational environment in preparation for future educational changes, focusing on national tasks such as Neulbom School and digital education and pledge projects such as improving academic ability.

The Provincial Office of Education submitted a supplementary budget to the Provincial Council on this day.

This will be finalized after deliberation at the 328th Gangwon Provincial Council, which will be held from the 8th of next month.
