A driver in his 60s who caused a rollover accident while driving a new car with his two-year-old granddaughter claimed that the accident occurred due to sudden acceleration, and the police are investigating the exact cause of the accident.

According to the Gyeongnam Haman Police Station on the 25th, at around 1:10 p.m. on the 17th, a sports utility vehicle (SUV) driven by a woman in her 60s, A, suddenly collided with the car in front at an intersection in Chilwon-eup, Haman-gun.

Afterwards, the SUV sped for about 2.3 km and hit a traffic sign on a local road near the Chilseo Interchange (IC), crossed over the opposite lane guardrail, and overturned in a nearby rice field.

In this accident, Mr. A fractured his ribs and his granddaughter was also injured. It was confirmed that none of them were life-threatening.

The SUV that overturned was completely damaged. In the aftermath of the initial collision and rollover accident, six nearby vehicles were partially damaged.

The SUV in which the accident occurred was known to be a new car that had been on the market for less than a month.

Mr. A claimed that the accident occurred due to sudden acceleration of the vehicle, stating to the police that “I stepped on the brake pedal at the time, but it did not work.”

Police said that the black box video showed the SUV urgently avoiding vehicles and obstacles. A police official explained, “Because the sunlight was strong at the time, it was impossible to determine whether the brake lights of the accident SUV came on from the black box of a nearby vehicle.”

The police sent the vehicle accident recording device (EDR) and black box to the National Institute of Forensic Science for analysis, and are investigating the exact circumstances of the accident.
