Choi Hong-gyu won the grand prize in the Korean language category at the 17th Korea Juknong Calligraphy and Painting Competition.

The Korea Juknong Calligraphy and Painting Contest, hosted by Juknong Seodan (Chairman Seo Geun-seop), is a rare contest held nationwide without an entry fee. Until April 17th, Korean, Chinese characters, literary paintings, traditional and western paintings, and modern paintings were held all over the country. A total of 600 works were submitted to six categories, including calligraphy and small calligraphy. Additionally, about 120 works were submitted to the recommended and invited artist exhibition held simultaneously.

On the 20th, after a screening at the Daegu Culture and Arts Center, the grand prize winner, Choi Hong-gyu, the grand prize winner, Pyo Young-chun (Chinese classics), and the excellence prize winners, Oh Moo-woong (Chinese classics), Lee Seong-bae (Chinese classics), and Kim Su-jeong (literary painting) were selected. In addition, 78 special selection points and 396 honorable mention points were selected.

Mr. Choi, who received the grand prize, said, “I have not been able to concentrate on calligraphy due to personal reasons, but I started again after 30 years and entered this competition with a beginner’s mind. I am very happy to receive this great honor. “I feel like it’s a whip that tells me to study harder in the future, and I’ll do my best,” he said.

Additionally, Youngjun Cho was selected as the Invitational Writer Award. Ms. Cho said, “First of all, I would like to express my gratitude to the teachers who guided me, and I want to share the joy and happiness with my husband, who always supports me. I would also like to express my gratitude to my fellow students who are always by my side and give me advice. “I tell you,” he said.

Chairman Song Hyeon-soo of the judging panel said, “A variety of calligraphy styles and painting styles appeared in the submitted works, and in particular, we were able to see many excellent works by new artists.” He added, “The works submitted evenly from Daegu and Gyeongbuk as well as other regions attracted attention, and the high level of art rarely seen in general competitions. “It was difficult to select a winner due to the variety of high-level works submitted, and I felt that this competition would develop further in the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, the exhibition of the winning works will be held in exhibition rooms 6 to 13 of the Daegu Culture and Arts Center from July 30 to August 4. An awards ceremony will be held at the Dalgubeol Hall of the Daegu Culture and Arts Center at 4 p.m. on July 30, the first day of the exhibition.
