U.S. President Joe Biden signed the security support budget bill for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan and the TikTok mandatory sale bill passed by Congress, respectively. Following President Biden’s signature, the bill took effect immediately.
According to Reuters, President Biden said at a press conference after signing the bill at the White House on the 24th (local time), “(With these bills) America’s partners will be able to defend themselves from threats to their sovereignty.” .
Biden said that this bill sends a direct message to Russian President Vladimir Putin, who is on the offensive in Ukraine, and that the initial shipments to Ukraine will begin shipping within hours.
Biden said, “He (Putin) failed again. America stands with our friends. “We will never bow to anyone, especially Putin,” he added.
Previously, the U.S. Senate passed a security package at the plenary session the previous day, which included a $95.3 billion (approximately 130 trillion won) aid package for Ukraine, Israel, and Taiwan, as well as the forced sale of TikTok.
This security package includes a $61 billion (approximately KRW 84 trillion) weapon aid plan to Ukraine, a $26 billion (approximately KRW 36 trillion) aid plan that includes military aid to Israel and humanitarian aid to the Gaza Strip, and Taiwan, etc. It contains a support plan worth $8.1 billion (approximately 11 trillion won) for Indo-Pacific security.
On this day, President Biden thanked House Speaker Mike Johnson for his efforts to bipartisanly pass a bill that had been deadlocked for several months, and announced that he would soon address the border security issue, which is the top priority for the Republican Party.
Biden expressed his gratitude, saying, “This is a reminder of what America can achieve when the two parties come together despite their differences.”
