[스포츠조선 장종호 기자] It has been confirmed that a hippopotamus that was thought to be male for seven years was in fact female.
According to local media such as the Mainichi Shimbun, a DNA test was conducted on ‘Genchan’, a 12-year-old hippopotamus living at Tennoji Zoo in Osaka, Japan, because his behavior was different from that of a typical male.
The zookeepers explained, “Typical male hippo behavior includes making courting sounds to female hippos, moving the tail like a propeller, and spraying excrement to mark territory.”
However, Gen-chan did not behave like this and there was no sign of male genitalia.
The test result was surprisingly female.
Genchan was classified as a male when he was brought to Tennoji Zoo from Mexico’s Africam Safari Zoo in 2017 at the age of 5.
