The Hanwha Eagles, who took the first overall pick, were the first to call Seohyun Kim in the 2023 KBO Rookie Draft held at the Westin Chosun Seoul in Jung-gu, Seoul on the 15th.

A total of 1,165 people applied for this draft, including 793 prospective high school graduates, 359 college graduates (including 59 early drafters), and 13 other players from overseas and pros.

As expected, Kim Seo-hyun took the 1st overall title out of 1,165 people.

This year, the KBO abolished the first round of nominations for the first time in 10 years since 2012 (2013 draft) and reintroduced the full draft.

Kim Seo-hyun was ‘the best prospect in 2023’ in name and reality, and won a title worthy of the draft.

Shim Jun-seok (Deoksu High School) announced his advance to American professional baseball and did not participate in the draft, so Kim Seo-hyun’s overall first pick was expected early.

Seohyun Kim appeared in 18 games at the National High School Baseball Tournament this year and posted a 3.31 ERA with 3 wins and 3 losses. He struck out 72 while he threw 55⅓ innings.

Seohyun Kim, a three-quarter-type pitcher, was highly praised by professional baseball scouts by throwing a fast ball over 150km/h with a unique pitching posture.

Hanwha general manager Jung Min-cheol explained the reason for the first overall selection in a simple and clear manner, saying, “I chose Kim Seo-hyun because he was good at baseball.”

The first round of the 2023 rookie draft was selected in the reverse order of the 2021 season team ranking: Hanwha-KIA Tigers-Lotte Giants-NC Dinos-SSG Landers-Kiwoom Heroes-LG Twins-Samsung Lions-Doosan Bears-kt wiz.

KIA, who had the second overall pick, chose Yun Young-cheol (18), a left-handed pitcher from Chungam High School.

Yoon Young-cheol, who throws a fastball at a speed of 140 km/h, played an active part in 15 games this year with 13 wins, 2 losses and an ERA of 1.66 with a stable control, and struck out 99 in 65 ⅓ innings.

KIA general manager Jang Jeong-seok said, “Yoon Young-chul’s record and skills are suitable for the top pick. All of our team members chose Yoon Young-cheol.”
