Apple’s plans for a calculator app are making headlines across multiple operating systems. AppleInsider reported that Apple is planning a major overhaul of the Calculator app in macOS 15. Changes are expected to include an iOS-inspired redesign, a new calculation history feature, and integration with the Notes app, which supports math note features. The calculator app in the new iPad OS 18 is expected to be the same as rumored for macOS 15. Because M-series Macs can run iPad apps, it makes sense for Apple to develop a new calculator for iPadOS 18 and bring it to macOS 15.

The new iPad calculator is available for all iPads on the iPadOS 18 compatibility list. The list has not yet been released, but according to a report by MacRumors in February, models excluding iPads equipped with the A10 or A10X Fusion chip among the iPad OS 17 compatibility list are expected to support iPad OS 18. iPads equipped with the A10 or A10X Fusion chip were released between 2017 and 2019.

The iPad released in 2011 did not support a basic calculator app. For the past 14 years, users have had to rely on third-party calculators like PCalc ($9.99), Calzy ($4.99), or Calcbot 2 (free or in-app purchase). It’s unlikely that the new iPad calculator will equal the feature set offered by these third-party apps, but it will be a handy tool for users who need relatively basic math functions.

Apple is expected to unveil new iPad Air and Pro models and a new Apple Pencil at the ‘Let Loose’ event held on May 7. Users waiting for the calculator app will have to wait another month until WWDC.
