The story of a British woman in her 20s who suffered from a disease that caused her genitals to remain in a constant state of unwanted arousal was revealed.

On the 23rd (local time), the American media New York Post published the story of British Scarlett Caitlin Wallen (21), who suffered from ‘Persistent Genital Arousal Disorder (PGAD)’ for 15 years. Genital arousal disorder is a disease in which a person suffers psychological pain due to persistent, unwanted, abnormal sexual excitement in the external genitalia, even though there is no sexual desire or sexual stimulation. It is different from excessive sexual desire or sexual addiction. Wallen has suffered from this condition since she was 6 years old. The long-term pain made it difficult for her to attend school and socialize with her peers. Wallen said she “feels like my genitals are on fire” and that she “can’t be around people for long because I don’t know when the symptoms will show up.” Wallen said she visited the San Diego Sexual Medicine Clinic for her typical college experience in 2020. The doctor said, “Wallen’s pelvic nerves are inherently hypersensitive to touch,” and “this is the cause of his genital arousal disorder.” She also believed that Wallen’s sexual dysfunction was caused by the SSRIs (antidepressants used to treat depression, anxiety disorders, etc.) that he had been taking. In 2023, Willen underwent a vestibulectomy (surgical removal of part of the area around the vaginal opening) to remove the painful part of her vagina. The vestibule is a part of the female erogenous zone and is located where the labia minora split on both sides. “She will most likely never feel natural sexual arousal again if all of her vagina is removed due to sexual dysfunction,” Wallen said, adding that she “remains hopeful that one day she will be able to live a normal life.” .

Representative symptoms of genital arousal disorder in women include ▲tingling in the clitoris, ▲a swollen feeling as if the vagina is excited, ▲increased vaginal lubrication, ▲spontaneous vaginal twitching, ▲nipple erection, and ▲clitoral erection. Although women do not experience functional abnormalities or other physical disabilities as a result, they feel great pain. In fact, there is a case of a woman in her 20s who experienced unwanted orgasms dozens of times every day and became exhausted. In addition, patients with genital persistent arousal disorder are prone to panic, depression, and anxiety, making them psychologically very vulnerable. Causes of genital persistent arousal disorder include pelvic vascular malformations, nerve abnormalities, side effects of medications, changes in sex hormones, and other physical and mental factors. In most cases, the exact cause is unknown, but fortunately, treatment is possible. In most cases, conservative treatment is done using drugs. Methods such as using tranquilizers or removing factors that worsen symptoms are used.
