British research team “Must be practiced in daily life… Reduces risk of death from all causes by 24%”

Physical activity plays an important role in preventing non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

A study showed that climbing stairs, which anyone can easily do in a short period of time, has a significant effect on extending lifespan.

Dr. Sophie Paddock’s team from the University of East Anglia in Norwich, UK and the Norfolk/Norwich University Hospital Foundation conducted a study on the effect of climbing stairs on 480,000 people aged 35 and older at the European Society of Cardiology Conference Preventive Cardiology 2024 (ESCPrev 2024) held in Athens, Greece on the 27th. It was revealed that a meta-analysis of the study confirmed the association between climbing stairs and extending lifespan.

The World Health Organization (WHO) recommends physical activity, saying it has significant health benefits for the heart, body, and mental health, and contributes to preventing and managing non-communicable diseases such as cardiovascular disease, cancer, and diabetes.

However, only one in four people worldwide practice physical activity at the level recommended by the WHO, and it is known that people with insufficient physical activity have a 20-30% increased risk of death compared to those who are sufficiently active.

In this study, the research team conducted a meta-analysis of nine studies that studied the effects of climbing stairs, regardless of the number of stairs and climbing speed.

The study included 480,479 people (53% women) aged 35 to 84, including healthy people and those with a history of heart attack and peripheral artery disease.

The research team said that most cardiovascular diseases can be prevented through physical activity such as exercise, and that climbing stairs is a practical and easily accessible physical activity. In this study, they investigated the effect of climbing stairs on the risk of cardiovascular disease and early death.

The results of the analysis showed that compared to people who did not climb stairs, the risk of death from all causes was 24% lower for people who climbed stairs, and the risk of death from cardiovascular disease was 39% lower.

Climbing stairs has also been found to be associated with a reduced risk of cardiovascular disease, including heart attack, heart failure, and stroke.

Dr. Paddock said, “Even a short period of physical activity has a positive effect on health, and climbing stairs for a short period of time can be easily incorporated into daily life,” adding, “If you have a choice between stairs and an elevator, taking the stairs is good for your heart health. “It will happen,” he said.

He added, “The results of this study suggest that the more stairs you climb, the greater the health improvement effect, but this needs to be confirmed through additional research.” He added, “We recommend that you first use calculations at home, work, or around the area.”
